Martyrs Day July 5, 2026 became a statement of reckoning, recognition, and celebration.  Using her prowess as an American civil rights attorney, legal correspondent, author, playwright, essayist, and racial justice activist, Gloria put out a call across the nation. MartyrsDay.US became a reality when the National Inaugural Martyrs Day Founders emerged: Ronald B. Saunders, Yunior Rivas, Ebony L. Dendy, Reginal Van Lee, Tenzin Gund Marrow, Vincent DeForest, Gwen Howze, Martha R. Conley, Ronald Collins, Dr. Andrew Smallwood, Anita D. Russell, Dr. Margaret Bristow, Dr. Artie Travis, Tamara M. Saunders, Kim E. Andrews, Bonita Penn, Lea Blumenfeld, Jawan Finley, and Martha Swan. Once assembled the organizing committee got to work, beginning with the Martyrs Day Resolution conjoined with the power of memory, purpose, proclamations, and national events. Dr. Edna B. McKenzie Branch Inaugural Commemoration of Martyrs Day: Our History Transcends the Future “We are making history. The Dr. Edna B. McKenzie Branch of ASALH (Association for the Study of African American Life and History) is the first branch to recognize  Martyrs Day.
