MASTERFUL PERSONALITY - 20. THE DRIVING FORCE OF WILL POWER - Orison Swett Marden - HQ Full Book.Chapter 20: THE DRIVING FORCE OF WILL POWER: The Unyielding Spirit That Conquers All ObstaclesThe world always stands aside for the determined youth; it makes way for the man with an iron will. The essence of a successful life lies in defeating defeat—overcoming obstacles, surmounting difficulties, and crushing discouragements that overwhelm the weak. Adopt this as your motto: "Defeating defeat." The world's greatest victors refuse to acknowledge defeat. They triumph over challenges that break others. If you are not larger than the adversities that seek to crush you, if you are not greater than any setback life throws at you, you will never achieve greatness. Recently, I spoke with a man whose business had been destroyed by the world war. What struck me most was his attitude toward his losses. He said he had lost everything—except his determination and his refusal to let any disaster make his life a failure. For a man with such a spirit, defeat does not exist. The mere reputation of possessing a strong will, an unshakable resolve, and an inability to recognize defeat is a tremendous asset in the pursuit of success. Even Confederate generals admitted it was futile to defeat Ulysses S. Grant because he never knew when he was beaten. Victor Hugo once said, "People do not lack strength; they lack will." Many suffer from weak willpower simply because they fail to exercise it. Their will is untrained, flabby, and directionless—never honed for great achievements. Like any other mental faculty, the will can be cultivated. Without systematic and disciplined effort, it remains dormant. The Nature of True Willpower Effective willpower is aggressive, continuous, and unyielding. It is not sporadic or passive—it is relentless, persistent, and bulldog-like in its grip. There is a tremendous creative force in the absolute conviction that you can and will accomplish what you set out to do. The belief that you were made for a specific purpose gives you unshakable confidence and endurance. Conversely, every time you indulge in discouragement—every time you entertain thoughts of failure, inadequacy, or mediocrity—you shape your destiny toward those very outcomes. Your thoughts become the blueprint of your life. There is always hope for the man who refuses to be mentally conquered—who presses forward no matter how many times he stumbles or how bleak the future appears. The Science of Success: Relentless Determination The entire science of success lies in the vigorous, unwavering affirmation of your ability and determination to achieve your goals. It means setting your face like flint toward your objective, refusing to be swayed by distractions or setbacks. Nothing can withstand such an invincible purpose. A resolute will and an unbreakable determination will carry you upstream against the strongest currents. But if your will is weak, if your courage falters at the first sign of difficulty, you will drift downstream like a lifeless fish—just another human derelict lacking the will to fight. You claim you long to make your mark, that you are ambitious—then why don’t you? What holds you back? The answer is simple: only yourself. The opportunities around you are infinitely greater than those seized by countless men and women who have achieved greatness. I have known young people so consumed by divine enthusiasm, so committed to their life’s purpose, that trying to stop them would be as futile as defying gravity. Thousands of war heroes, maimed and wounded, now fight just as fiercely in civilian life—despite their physical handicaps. Will you, with no such obstacles, do less? No Excuses—Only Action Do not hide behind excuses: "I have no chance, no help, no capital, no guidance." If there is anything in you worth having, you will make a way where none exists. Success is always up for auction—the highest bidder in grit and effort wins it. Get busy. Work with all your might. There is no such thing as failure for the determined, ambitious worker. Only the weakling blames circumstances. His path is always blocked by "insurmountable" obstacles. But for the valiant soul, there are no insurmountable barriers. Handicaps, opposition, ridicule, and poverty only strengthen his resolve. The Power of Dead-in-Earnest Resolve Those who accomplish great things are tremendously in earnest. They radiate intensity, vehemence, and an unquenchable eagerness to fulfill their purpose. There is a magic in dead-in-earnestness that commands respect and admiration. I have seen a single determined boy transform an entire workplace, just as Benjamin Franklin did. His relentless drive to improve himself, to seize every spare moment for study, inspired even the laziest observers. When I see a young man dead-in-earnest—determined to extract the utmost from himself, his time, and his opportunities—I know success is inevitable. Such resolve does not coexist with failure. The Triumph of Grit Over Circumstances If you are earnest and honest, you can succeed without capital. Your determination will attract opportunities and allies. The very reputation of being dead-in-earnest is a powerful asset—it signals purpose, integrity, and an unbreakable will. The epitaph of Captain Scott and his men at the South Pole reads: "To seek, to strive, to find, and not to yield." No hardship could deter them. Such is the spirit that wins. Most people fail because their resolve is wishy-washy—a mere desire, not an unyielding determination to win at all costs. True success comes from quiet, continuous effort, rooted in faith in one’s mission and ability. How to Make Things Happen A young man once asked me how to "make things happen." The answer is simple: Grit your teeth and declare, "I can do what I will to do!" Then act—relentlessly, without losing sight of your goal. This is how Edison, Carnegie, and Lincoln achieved greatness. I believe in the power of affirmation—in persistently declaring your determination, strengthening your weaknesses, and shaping your character. Every word you speak, every thought you harbor, is a force for good or ill. If there is energy in your blood, iron in your backbone, and a masterful purpose in your soul, you will succeed. Obstacles mean nothing to such a spirit—they crumble before it. The Only True Defeat: Surrender Many fail because they do not fully commit. They leave a path for retreat, fearing hardship. But mediocrity is the only reward for half-hearted effort. Admiral Farragut, lashed to the mast during battle, removed all possibility of retreat. So must you—bind yourself to your purpose. The only thing that can defeat you is your own surrender. External setbacks may delay you, but true success—the triumph of character—cannot be taken from you. Some of history’s greatest men died in poverty, yet nothing could defeat their spirit. Do not be fooled by appearances. The only real defeat is admitting defeat—failing to try, to persist, to believe in yourself. The Invincible Will Napoleon said, "The Old Guard never surrenders—it may be annihilated, but it never surrenders." Likewise, only voluntary surrender can defeat you. You cry, "If only things would change!" But wishing changes nothing—only action does. How long would a house take to build if the builder merely sat wishing? The men who forge ahead create their own opportunities. Lincoln, Carnegie, and Schwab did not wait for perfect conditions—they made their own. Grit: The Universal Substitute Grit can replace health, opportunity, capital, education, and influence. It has been the secret behind countless success stories. A British nobleman, lacking arms and legs, forced his way into Parliament through sheer will. Countless others have overcome poverty, disability, and ridicule by substituting determination for privilege. If you expect the world to make way for you, you must march forward with unshakable resolve. The world respects those who radiate inevitability. The Final Word: Never Give Up The spirit of "never give up" guarantees success. Show me a young man with no quit in him, and I will show you a future victor. Do not wait for ideal conditions—they do not exist. The greatest achievements arise from ordinary, difficult circumstances. If you work with half-hearted effort, you doom yourself to mediocrity. Bring your full power to your task—or do not come at all. Success belongs to those who fling their entire being into their purpose, who refuse to acknowledge defeat. If you want something badly enough, no sacrifice will be too great. Conclusion: The Unconquerable WillThe world steps aside for the man who knows no defeat. Your willpower is your greatest ally—cultivate it, strengthen it, and let it drive you to victory. Defeat is only real when you accept it. Rise, fight, and never yield—for the unconquerable will is the master of fate. #OrisonSwettMarden #MasterfulPersonality #PersonalDevelopment #SelfImprovement #WinningPersonality #SuccessMindset #PositiveThinking #MotivationalBooks #CharacterDevelopment #PersonalGrowth #SelfHelpBooks #InspirationDaily #MindsetMatters #LeadershipDevelopment #EmotionalIntelligence #SelfConfidence #InnerStrength #LifeSkills #EmpowerYourself #SuccessPrinciples
