Hello everybody. Good morning, good evening, good afternoon, good day. Hey, so officially I have my as podcast, I've been running. Very grateful to the folks in Z cast for transferring all my episodes over, except one, but you know what better one than, you know, nothing ever transferring.
So grateful to them for their help. Um, today I have my subject. It's called material tings. And if you are West Indian affiliated with anyone who is West Indian, you know, anyone, you know exactly what tings are.
Really nothing hard. Tings, things without the H. Um, I had another topic, but again, as I have always said, as I walk, I think, and as I think the subjects come to me, I've been on a mini hiatus. I had family over Thanksgiving, then we actually went away really great day because ironically, our office was the day after that, five a.m.
I had to go to Niagara Falls, which was amazing. And I'm right now home today called out, was a feeling so great. But now I'm getting there so I can actually record today. Um, I was in a conversation with my mom and we were just talking about, you know, hair and clothes and just all these different things that we tend to be so attached to sometimes.
And the one thing we did speak about was hair. Um, in advance, please excuse me if I sound stuffy. Um, my algees have been trying to wreak havoc ever since winter started. So apologies in advance.
Um, and it has been, it was a very good conversation because for me, hair, I would say being a nineties kid growing up in the nineties, hair was a big thing, perms were a big thing. I, you know, I remember just for me, the perm, you know what I'm saying? You know, you get the box and you get the regular or the other one, you know, the extra strength one or, you know, whichever relaxer have you because not everyone used just for me for kids. Sometimes they use other ones, but for us little ones.
And I remember using it and my hair was all straight and it was getting along and all this other good stuff. And only problem was during that time, lie was a big deal because it was an everything first to straighten your hair. So lie made your hair straight, but for me, my reaction was kind of worse. So my hair would be long, but my hair would be super, super thin.
Thankfully, I didn't have any chemical burns. Thankfully my, you know, the hair from my scalp from the roots, you know, weren't completely damaged in that sense where you could see my scalp. But you can still tell that there's a difference. You know, and I grew up and, you know, as you grow, you change things.
And at one point, you kind of decided like, okay, perms aren't working for you. We let it grow out. So I had a awkward grout phase between natural and perm. As you guys know, you know that how it looks.
It's like two different kinds of hair, two different textures. And then at one point, I got it cut off the perm part. So I had like a little puff and I used to just braid my hair and put box braids and twists and cornrows and I just did everything. And again, this is all timeline wise.
And then moving forward after a while, I was just like, okay, let me switch and do something different. And I just kept looking at locks, looking at the kinds of locks, the length, the styles, started to fall in love with it. And I remember it was like around Mother's Day, a few years ago. And I was like, you know, I think I might want to try it.
And I was like, you know, fine, if you want to try, I give a try. So what if my aunt said actually did her hair? She started her hair for her lock journey. She actually started mine and pretty messy because you have the wax and the gel and all that other stuff during that time, we were going jogging.
So that really was awkward because it's like, you got sweat, you have, you know, heat, you have gel, you have wax. Even though they were like, oh, no, that's good. They'll help the hair, you know, lock up faster. It was just just the thought of me to wash.
It was just kind of hard, but I got that done. I went for about three years with half the locks and my hair was about shoulder length and then awkward enough, I think Pinterest and I have a weird relationship. I go on there because I went there for the dreads and I'm going there for short here. So I'm going here, looking at shortcuts and going back and forth.
And I remember again, goes home, like, hey, you know, I think I want to try something new. I want to do something new and I showed it to her. She's like, okay, this is a good combo for your haircut. And my hair has been short ever since.
And now my hair is actually so short, but I'm growing it out right now. I figured, you know, once I get enough length, I might put some box brains just to kind of mix it up a bit. I mean, if I want to, when it gets really hot outside, I'll shave it down again and style it. But what I have come to learn and notice and realize is hair is literally something as temporal.
It's on your head today. And trust me, if there is an accident or got the bid, we get sick. The hair is gone. And I sat there and I was just like, okay, so are we going to really look at hair?
Or are we going to look at the life that we still have, even though the hair is not there, you have people who are born without hair, in which they acquire certain autoimmune diseases, some who begin, you know, they have alopecia. And these are people who wear wigs. And guess what? Some of them don't wear wigs and they're proud of themselves because they are still making it every day.
And I literally looked at that and I was like, you know, we are living in a material world because again, you have people who when you go on Instagram or you go on Facebook, Twitter, whatever it is, you have these girls who have, you know, long, flowy hair and all this other stuff. And unfortunately, which we have heard plenty of times when you have people who have this hair, beautiful hair, but it doesn't mean that's going to work for me. That doesn't mean that that fits me. It doesn't mean that's even for me.
But then when you hear about what others are attracted to, they're attracted to that. They're not attracted to you with your cute short haircut. They're not attracted to you with your cute curly fro. I don't know if they're attracted to this long flowy, like, like, you know, Pocahontas or, you know, Rapunzel, like, length of hair.
And they're more attracted to that because, you know, it's weird because I'm like, okay, you're attracted to that length. But what happens if God forbid she gets sick or she gets tired of it and she one day walks into the house with a bob? Are you going to still love her for her hair? Because I thought you would love someone for themselves, not for their hair.
Granted, when you're attracted to someone, yes, you are attracted to a, you know, specific thing or a couple of things. But as you get to know that person, you should have a little bit more of a list of other things that makes you attracted to them because you have people who they are married, they're in love and things happen and things change. And when these things change, how, how do you react now being that? It's not going to be the same.
I look at also my phone, simple enough, because I realize it's a new year coming. I just turned 27 trying to figure out what makes sense, what doesn't make sense. And I look at my phone and I'm like, you know what, I have the iPhone 6 Plus. So this was the first big iPhone.
I had the 5S before and I was regretting it because I had a Samsung Galaxy Note 3. So you can tell why I had, you know, semi regrets because I go from a large phone to a small phone. So once the 6 Plus was out and available, I ran to T-Mobile. And I was just like, take my money, take this thing, I need a different phone.
So I've had this for a couple of years now. I see the iPhone X looks great. Again, still too small for my taste and I see the iPhone 8 Plus. Now I look at it and I'm just like, OK, maybe I might get the 8 Plus.
Part of me is not necessarily on that same wavelength because I see the Note 8 and I've had Samsung phones. I've had nothing but Android for most of my life anyway. Before Android, what do we have? We had Nokia and, you know, we had the older ones.
And I had the sidekick, not forgetting sidekick. Great phone, by the way. So I'm just like, do I want to get an iPhone 8 Plus because the X is way too small for my taste. I've seen it and I literally can put that phone on top of mine and it basically has that phone for lunch.
And I don't want to get a phone that's smaller just because of the features. I actually want a phone where it's everything I want it to be and not just because I could do the Etymology. I mean, I watch animals all the time on Twitter, you know, from the songs to the stories I make with the Etymology's. And if you haven't seen them, find them, look them up.
There's one I think that's called I think it's called Animoji Karaoke on Twitter. Check them out. They have a few songs here and there, a few clips here and there. And for me, I just look at them just like, you know what?
I have a New Year ahead of me. I feel like I need to change. I need something different. And I feel like I might just change my phone from iPhone.
I might go back to Samsung. I've had this conversation at work. I actually posted on Facebook one day and a couple of people I know from work with and they're like, yes, change it. When person was like, no, when person was, you know, I had someone give me a really awesome review about the phone too, someone I know from college.
And she was explaining like, hey, you know, if you'd like to take notes or you'd like to do certain things, this photos for you, it's a lot bigger than what I'm used to. You know, she gave me something that I can look at and just go, huh, maybe I should think about it. Another person was just like, OK, you're not the only one that's trying to switch a phone. I might switch to the Pixel 2.
We actually had that conversation a long time ago. I was just like, you know, I might just switch. And for me, I frankly don't care which one I have. I'm not necessarily tethered to a specific brand.
I don't want to go to Samsung. Frankly, I don't really care. It's not a big deal to me anyway. Feature wise, Samsung and Apple, they're kind of right now, they're the same boat.
The only difference is Apple right now went ahead with the facial recognition, which back in the lie, beautiful piece of technology, beautiful to hear the, you know, during the presentation when they were explaining, you know, they had, you know, someone who creates masks, create all these different ones to help with the technology of face mapping and face detection and all this great stuff and part of it goes. But Samsung kind of has something like that already. They might not necessarily do exactly what Apple's. I mean, it was just like a huge shrug.
Didn't really care. So I mean, I might for my new year, I might switch and get the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 part of me is still kind of digressing because I heard the Note 9 and the S9 plus might be colossal phones in terms of part of me goes, don't know if I'm going to do that yet. But nevertheless, again, it's material things. These are things that I remember having this conversation like, no, don't leave Apple, don't leave the iPhone because iPhone is this.
And I'm just like, and again, I don't care. The same, I don't care about my hair. If my hair is short, if it is long, whatever it is, it is what it is. I look at it and to me, I always say, you know, you can have it today and if you lose it tomorrow, are you going to look at what you've lost?
Are you going to look at what you still have? Are you going to still look at what you could have had or are you just going to look at what you have right now? And I'd rather look at what I have right now. What I have right now before me is a whole new year that I want it to be amazing.
I want to put as much positivity as I can into this new year. I want to receive just any and everything that could be offered to me within this new year. I just want to thrive during my new year. I want to have success.
I want to be able to, you know, just all of the good things. And I can't do that if I just look at things that I don't have or look at things that just say, oh, maybe, you know, with this help with hair, having long hair. When I had my long hair, it was weird. No one really looked at my hair.
No one looked at me. When my hair was short, I got so many compliments. And again, it was confusing, but at the same time, I was just like, that's not going to influence me to keep having short hair. You know, I want I'm still going to choose whatever path I choose, where my hair is concerned, but aside to brand it, if I want to cut it, if I want to put crochet brains, which is another option that I might use at one point at some point, whatever it is, I'm down for any and everything.
For me right now, I just want to look at the new year and look at whatever I could receive from the new year because I hear it could be long, could be short. I still want to have a job, but here could be short. It could be long. It could, you know, whatever I do with it, I just want to make sure that financially I'm capable to be stable.
I just want the new year to be as positive for me as it could possibly be. And I'm not going to look at things that others might have or they might acquire along the way and hope that for myself, because I don't know how long they have it for, but I want to have it for as long as I need to have it. I want to have as long as it is possible for me because what you have today, you might not have tomorrow. I don't want to be in that same boat because I want to have it tomorrow and for the days ahead.
So when I think about things that are material, it's things that we tend to look at or look at others and we tend to compare ourselves. Again, it puts you into a depressive state. It makes you feel as if what you have is nothing and I've been there. Trust me, I look at people who were married and have kids at my age and I'm like, oh, that's so cute.
And the part of me goes, no, it's not. That's their timeline. That's not yours. What they're going through is for them, what you're going through is for you.
That doesn't mean that you'd have been able to handle a husband and children right now. And in all honesty, I don't think so. I mean, I can handle a husband, boyfriend, fiancé, whatever. I can handle that, but I don't think I can even handle a child right now.
As I did see on Twitter, it says, OK, what age would you want to have? Would you want to have a kid? I saw the age of financially stable and I literally clapped to the point where I was just like, yes, that's exactly the age I want to. Because if I can't fully take care of myself, how can I add a child to the mix?
That does not make any sense. If I want to accomplish certain things, how can I have a child within my life? Because now your attention shifts. You know, not saying life doesn't happen, but it's like if you're going to plan these kind of thoughts, you have to think things through because sometimes when we think things, we don't think it through thoroughly.
And then unfortunately, we end up in a whole different whole different space of life. So for me, I'd rather just take my time if I have a boyfriend and it turns into anything great, you don't want to have a kid. But right now, I just want to focus on more on me. I want to relax more.
I want to enjoy myself more, enjoy life more before I can bring a child into it. I mean, if I have someone in my life, I can enjoy it with them, which would be really, really great. It's the most I kind of want outside of myself. So when I look at material tings, material tings, as it would be said, like my dad would probably say it.
It is really as temporal. These are the things that it goes here today, gone tomorrow. You can buy it today, you can sell it tomorrow. You know, it's more looking forward for the things that will help you grow, will help you be a better person that will allow you to be able to understand more about yourself, no matter the age, because we still are learning every day.
We still learn about ourselves every day, even things about ourselves. We do not want to learn or want to know. You have no choice. So, you know, as you guys are maybe walking and listening to this or at home, listening to this, I would love to have your opinions, your thoughts.
And if you have any moments that I have of an epiphany, if you want to call it, when you kind of thought about something, you're just like, maybe I took that too seriously because it's not that it's really not that serious. Maybe I look at something one way and it didn't make any sense. Maybe I took this one way and maybe I should have done something differently because, again, it's material. It's not something that is going to help you grow.
Having a hairstyle is not going to help you grow as a person, having a type of car, a type of house, a type of phone or type of life is not what we're going to help you grow because what I've seen is you have people who are swimming in cash to the point where they can probably use it as toilet paper or paper towel or as a wash rag because they are swimming in money. But the problem is they are deeply troubled. They were alone. You know, they have no one really because again, the only people that you attract are people who attract who are attracted to money and not really attracted to you as a person.
So it doesn't make you want to make friends or get into relationships. I've seen this. We all seen it. You have social media, you have different media outlets when you watch TV, you have different magazines and you see the lives of these people.
Some of them who are very successful, but yet still they are so much an island because they don't want anyone to come and either steal their spotlight or quote unquote ruin things from them in a way that might not even necessarily make full sense. We might not even comprehend exactly what they mean. But when you look at it, I'm like, you have all this money and I'm thinking that you should be happy, but you're not. I don't have as much money as you do, but I feel so much more secure.
I feel so much better about myself and I want to feel even, you know, have a greater sense of self in this upcoming next year. And I realize, yeah, material things don't help make you happy. It doesn't help you have any form of growth. So as you guys are listening to this, I would love it if you would email because we have a Gmail now.
It is as we walk pod at gmail.com. Again, as we walk pod at gmail.com. I hope you guys enjoy. I hope you also, again, excuse me for my stuff.

And I would love for you guys to email if you have any ideas or thoughts about another episode, if you have a Twitter and you would like to join me for an episode where I can kind of question you on as you walk what you think about your thoughts, your day that you're having, whatever's going on with you. And sunrise is actually taken. We actually were on the beach and hadn't beach and sun was rising and I was just like perfect. So I took that and I just put a little filter just to kind of give the colors a little bit, you know, different more. I hope I use this right saturation.
If it's not, let me know. Just to give a different look. And I thought that would be the perfect picture for a podcast because you walk anywhere in the best place that you I think the beach, of course. So please leave your comments, questions, suggestions, feedback.

So good morning, good evening, good afternoon, good day, whatever, wherever you're listening to this. Hey, this is the As We Walk podcast.
I am Candy. Have a great day. Hope you're enjoying it. Also today, lastly was we actually had an incident in New York City.
We had a pipe bomb that was detonated at 8th Avenue at Port Authority today. Today's Monday, December 11th. And I am very grateful that no one was seriously injured. You just had a couple of people who had headaches and tinnitus, which is regular of the ears.
Other than that, they actually apprehended this aspect. He is right now also being treated. I'm just really glad that no one was seriously injured. I'm glad because this could have gone a whole lot worse.
Very grateful that this was actually everything was handled, everything was taken care of, no one was completely injured. Most of all, everybody was able to still go about their day and still be able to do what you have to do. But in everything, please still remember to be vigilant. Please remember to look at your surroundings at all times.
