It is truly hard to pin the singer-songwriter label on him because his original compositions go well beyond what you'd expect from an artist in that genre. Mathew is a songsmith who creates music in a way that a visual artist might create a striking painting. He specializes in juxtaposition, combining dark and light elements that contrast each other whether that be in his lyrics, instrumentation, or both.
