Mathilda Chapter 9

In which the narrator recounts two years of solitary reflection and intellectual engagement, during which a pure and gentle friendship unexpectedly visits despite the deep wounds of sorrow that have settled within her heart. She then tells the tale of Woodville, a gifted and admired poet whose radiant life and love promise felicity until cruel fate intervenes with a sorrowful and poignant turn.
