MATTHEW 5: COVENANT OVER CONTRACT

from Mission Sent Hosted by Mission Church

Send us Fan Mail Divorce is one of those topics that can instantly trigger shame, anger, relief, grief, or all four at once, so we slow down and start where Jesus starts: the heart. We open with Romans 3:23 and the Sermon on the Mount to make one thing clear, none of us get to stand above the conversation like we’ve “done it right.” The question we keep coming back to is simple and searching: is it ever Jesus’ intention for someone to get divorced? From Matthew 5:31-32 we trace the idea of a “certificate of divorce” back to Deuteronomy 24 and the way people turned God’s words into a convenient exit clause. That contract mindset still lives today, and we challenge it with the biblical picture of marriage as covenant and “one flesh” from Genesis 2:24. We also draw a firm line between everyday marriage hardship and abuse. Safety is not negotiable, and getting real help matters, but “this is hard” is not the same as “this is unsafe.” Then we zoom out to the bigger battle: a culture that keeps telling us the family is the problem, even as loneliness and instability rise. We talk why breaking families doesn’t create freedom, it often creates chaos, and why Jesus calls out “hardness of heart” in Matthew 19. Finally, we land on hope and accountability. Marriage is meant to mirror the gospel, Christ and the church, and Ephesians 5 forces us to rethink fairness, sacrifice, and what love actually costs. If this challenged you, share it with someone who needs it, subscribe for the next message in the series, and leave a review.
