Matthew 6:5-15 | Discipled By Jesus For Prayer

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus of Nazareth gives instruction on the type of prayer that shapes us to more readily follow him whole-heartedly. He teaches us a new posture before God - “when you pray, pray in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you”. This new teaching on prayer doesn’t take away the reward or spiritual vibrancy of prayer. It doesn’t make it bland, disinteresting, or less valuable. Who we are in secret, is who we really are. Jesus is instructing us to anchor our relationship with God in the secret places - the places where we are most ourselves, free from faking, hiding, and pretending. “your Father knows what you need before you ask him. Pray then like this..."
