Matthew 8:23-27
from Podcast on The Way · host Dale Tompkins
Following Jesus does not come with a promise of easy circumstances. In Matthew 8:23-27, the disciples were doing exactly what Jesus told them to do when a violent storm, described with the same Greek word used for an earthquake, threatened to sink their boat. These were experienced fishermen who knew the Sea of Galilee well, and they were terrified. Sometimes the storms we face are not signs that we went the wrong direction. They may be signs that we are exactly where He led us. In the middle of the chaos, Jesus was asleep. This is not a small detail. It reveals both His full humanity, exhausted after a long day of healing and teaching, and His complete trust in His Father. He was not indifferent to the danger. He simply knew who was in charge of the weather. When the disciples finally cried out, He did not calm the storm first. He turned to them and addressed their fear, calling them people of little faith. Their faith was small, but it was enough to bring the power of Jesus into their situation. It is not the size of your faith that matters. It is the size of the One you place your faith in. When Jesus stood and rebuked the wind and the sea, the calm that followed was immediate and total. The disciples were left asking what kind of man could do such a thing, and every Jewish person in that boat would have known the answer from Psalm 107. Only God commands nature and receives its obedience. Jesus had just done what the Old Testament says only God can do. This passage also echoes the story of Jonah, another man asleep in a storm, but the contrast is striking. Jonah ran from God and could only offer himself to calm the sea. Jesus rested in God and spoke the storm into silence. And just as Jonah went under so others could live, Jesus went into the depths of death on the cross so that those who trust in Him would never have to face the full storm of God's judgment alone.
