Matthew Chapter 26 Q&A: Bible Study by Atheists

Matthew 26 is where the Jesus story finally starts cashing all those prophecy checks it’s been writing for 25 chapters, and somehow the theological accounting gets even messier. We kick things off by correcting ourselves about the authorship of Matthew, because unlike certain ancient religious traditions, we’re perfectly capable of saying, “Yeah, we got that wrong.” From there, it’s straight into unnamed women dumping expensive ointment on Jesus, disciples arguing that the money could’ve helped the poor, and Jesus essentially responding, “The poor will still be poor tomorrow. Right now, this is about me.”Then comes Judas and the 30 pieces of silver, which raises one of Christianity’s nastiest philosophical problems: if Judas had to betray Jesus for God’s plan and prophecy to work, what exactly is Judas guilty of?
