Matthew: Jesus the Emmanuel King

"As our king, Jesus addresses the human problem of our need for a righteous ruler, and obedient servant-king. Jesus was King over all creation as the divine Son. In His incarnation, he was also born a king, although His enthronement as the messianic King did not occur until after the work was done at the cross and in His resurrection (Phil 2:8-11). On the cross, Jesus was the King even though the crowds did not understand this. Ironically, the sign above the cross-King of the Jews- spoke truth despite their cries to do away with Him... although Jesus was the Son and the Lord from birth, it was still necessary for Him to do a work to become our Savior and King (Rom 1:3-4). Why? Because before He takes His throne, He must defeat His enemies-sin, death, and the devil-on a cross as our covenant head (Phil 2:6-11; Rev 5:5-10)." —Trent Hunter & Stephen Wellum
