Matthew Smith: Hydrotherapy (The History of Using Water to Treat Mental Illnesses)

Matthew Smith, Ph.D., is a Professor of Health History at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow. He is the author of An Alternative History of Hyperactivity: Food Additives and the Feingold Diet and Hyperactive: The Controversial History of ADHD. He has also published a book on the history of food allergy called Another Person's Poison: A History of Food Allergy (Columbia University Press). His current project, funded by the AHRC, is on the history of social psychiatry and the link between socioeconomic factors and mental health. He has won the Roy Porter Award, the Cadogan Prize, and the Pressman-Burroughs Wellcome Award for his research and writing, has been a BBC Radio3 New Generation Thinker, and is a member of the Royal Society of Edinburgh's Young Academy of Scotland.
