from The Daily Ripples Podcast · host Pastor Mike & Corey
The past doesn't change. But it doesn't have to stay in charge. This episode is about the mechanics of how it loses its grip — and why "just let it go" has never once worked as a strategy. The past cannot be changed, but it does not have to control the present. Healing begins when I stop reliving what has already been done. Corey opens with the honest problem: he doesn't have the power to simply decide he's done carrying yesterday. He's been pushing things down his whole life, running from things, telling himself it was always somebody else's fault. He walks through a mock fourth-step resentment — against Mike, for cutting him off on the podcast, a thing that never happened — to show how the first three columns of the inventory build a perfect, airtight, completely false case. It's only when you get to the fourth column, where the book says "then we turned to our part," that the real issue shows up. The first three columns, he says, are a lie. The truth lives in the fourth. Then comes the stove. His first sponsor Doug asked him: can you still feel the burn from a hot stove you touched in the past? No. Can you feel it if someone slept with your girlfriend? Yeah. You can feel that again. You can feel it over and over. That's what reliving is — emotional pain that stays live when physical pain doesn't, and a mind that keeps pressing play. Mike ties it together with 1 John 1:9 — confession is how the Holy Spirit loosens the grip. Then he and Corey work through the tenth step, which gets called a maintenance step but functions more like a way of living: continued to take personal inventory, and when we were wrong, promptly admitted it. Not at night. Promptly. Real-time. The nighttime piece, Corey points out, is actually on the next page — that's page 86, that's meditation, and the book specifically warns you not to drift into morbid reflection because you'll just wake up depressed. The close lands on Mike's distinction: maintenance isn't the problem — it's what you're maintaining. Maintaining meetings only is half measures. Maintaining the spiritual program, pouring into it daily, working with others — that's what keeps you from going back to the past. Find every daily entry at dailyripples.com.
