MBE EP 31 Dan Heyworth, Co-Owner of Box™, on Craftsmanship and Automation in Building Local

from Master Builders Elevate: Building a Better Business · host Ryan Castle

In this podcast, Ryan talks to Dan Heyworth, co-owner of Box™ (an award-winning architecture practice and home design & build company),  about merging quality of craftmanship and efficiencies of automation in making well-designed and well-constructed homes. Dan's shares his ideas on what the building industry can do to strengthen areas and create more jobs for the betterment of the New Zealand construction sector and homeowners.Box™ was founded on the basic principle that designers, builders, and contractors must work together and work better to bring down the cost of well-designed and well-constructed homes. Their end-to-end model tries to merge the efficiencies of working together as an ego-free team in design and construction. By re-examining the relationship between designer and builder, they are taking steps to make design more relevant in delivering a lower total cost of ownership and being more accessible to those seeking a place to call home.Covering a range of topics within design and build, Dan reveals his thoughts on creating guilds again (such as stone masonry, blacksmith, toi whakairo (Māori carving)) and how that will not only benefit the economy by getting more people into trade and lowering unemployment but also improve the quality of the homes and environments we are building.  Positive impacts such as improving the landscapes in which we live while immersing ourselves in culture and hearty community living. Dan also discusses automation in the building industry, and the role of OSM (off-site manufacturing) and Pre-Fabrication. He believes that homes completely constructed of OSM should be a thing of a past, and that merging the craftsmanship of design and build with the efficiency of OSM in parts of the process will lead to making better homes for New Zealand families.
