Today marks a significant moment for Ireland as the country officially takes over the Presidency of the Council of the European Union for the eighth time since joining what was then the European Economic Community in 1973.Over the next six months, Ireland will chair meetings, broker negotiations and help steer some of the EU's most important legislation through the decision-making process.
