Medieval Armenia

In this episode, we explore medieval Armenia through the rise and persecution of the Paulician and Tondrakian movements, two religious communities condemned as heretical by Armenian and Byzantine authorities. We examine how these groups challenged established church hierarchies, doctrines, and sacraments, becoming not only theological opponents but also perceived political and geopolitical threats on the frontier of powerful empires. The episode looks at the harsh measures used against their followers, including excommunication, forced resettlement, and mass execution, as well as the difficulty modern historians face in reconstructing their beliefs because most surviving accounts were written by hostile orthodox clerics. We also consider accusations that the movements were connected to Gnosticism or Dualism and what these contested descriptions reveal about religious authority, dissent, and social conflict in medieval Armenia. Ultimately, the story of the Paulicians and Tondrakians offers a window into the struggle between centralized religious institutions and alternative Christian traditions in the medieval Armenian world.
