Medieval falconry: how knights hunted with birds of prey

#medieval #falconry #history In this fascinating episode, we dive deep into the world of medieval falconry! Hendrik and Carmen show you how wild birds of prey became loyal hunting partners and why this art was far more than just hunting. Learn all about the sophisticated hierarchy of birds of prey – from the imperial eagle to the lady's merlin. We explain the spectacular hunting techniques: the lightning-fast stoop of the peregrine falcon at over 300 km/h and the agile woodland-edge hunting of the goshawk. It gets particularly exciting with training – from the first trust-building exercises to the risky first free flight without a line. The episode also reveals the darker sides of historical methods like "waking" and compares them with modern, respectful training approaches. A fascinating insight into an art form that is now UNESCO World Cultural Heritage and reflects the medieval understanding of partnership between humans and animals.
