Medieval Jewish Quarter of Tarazona: Hispanic Jewish History and Memory

from Judería medieval de Tarazona: Historia y memoria

Medieval Jewish Quarter of Tarazona: Hispanic Jewish History and Memory Final Episode This final episode is an emotional tribute to the complete series that reconstructed the life of the Jewish community of Tarazona during the medieval period. For centuries, the Jews of this frontier city lived, worked, prayed, and wrote in Aragonese Romance, but they wrote it with Hebrew letters, creating a unique form of expression called Hebrew aljamía. Over the course of forty episodes, the series explored the daily life, splendor, and rupture of the aljama of Tarazona. The narration was guided by Sol de Almalí, a real Jewish woman from the fourteenth century, who led the listener through fundamental themes: the rise of powerful lineages such as the Portella and the Amarillo, life in the old and new Jewish quarters, the impact of the Black Death and the War of the Two Peters, the central role of women, coexistence with Christians and Moors, the fear of the Inquisition, and the trauma of the edict of expulsion of 1492. Based on documented research by historian Miguel Ángel Motis Dolader, the series does not seek to idealize the past, but to understand it and listen to it. It is a sonic guide for travelers, a space of memory for descendants of Sepharad, and a tribute to those who were expelled but not forgotten. The episode concludes with a poetic colophon: “Tarazona was stone, it was word, and it was language written in secret. Because as long as someone pronounces these names, as long as someone listens to these stories, the Jewish quarter of Tarazona remains alive.” Narrated by: Sol de Almalí Direction and production: Ignacio Javier Bona López
