Before Vance can learn more, he's called to a murder scene where businessman John Meeker has been stabbed to death in his office. District Attorney Markham and Sergeant Heath inform Vance that Worth himself found the body and was discovered by Meeker's wife Helen bending over her husband's corpse. Worth had both motive and opportunity, as he stood to inherit control of the company. As Vance investigates, the mystery deepens. Worth maintains his innocence but refuses to explain the significance of the torn dollar bill, fearing it will implicate him further. Meanwhile, someone takes a shot at Worth outside his home, suggesting the real killer believes Worth possesses dangerous knowledge. With Helen Meeker, assistant Jeff Hallahan, and other employees all under suspicion, Vance must unravel why a half dollar bill could be worth a fortune and who desperately wants to keep its secret hidden.
