As the creator of Boowa and Kwala, Jason Barnard entertained millions of children around the world. The cartoon dog and koala were the stars of their own international TV series, books and albums and at the height of their popularity, their website attracted 60 million visitors a year. Jason came up with the idea for the characters with his then-wife Veronique in 1998 to teach young children about the world around them and help them learn essential life skills like kindness and empathy. But the person who probably ended up learning the most from the cartoon characters was Jason himself. To make sure Boowa and Kwala’s online platform was robust enough to cope with the demand, Jason ended up learning to code and manage the website himself. He says: “I had to make sure the site could deliver a billion page views a year without falling apart as children get very upset when they can’t play their games.” The experience was a baptism of fire for Jason but it sent his career into a new direction – working with the internet. He is now the CEO of Kalicube, a digital marketing agency which helps business leaders and public figures futureproof their online brands. The 58-year-old, who originally comes from Leeds in the UK, is now an expert in both search engine and AI algorithms and has created his own SaaS platform which leverages more than a billion data points.
