After a federal jury convicted her in December 2021 for helping Jeffrey Epstein recruit, groom, and traffic underage girls, she was sentenced in June 2022 to 20 years in prison. Her first big post-trial effort centered on the juror issue, after a juror revealed publicly that he had discussed his own history of sexual abuse during deliberations despite not disclosing it properly during jury selection. Maxwell argued that this deprived her of a fair trial and warranted a new one, but the trial judge rejected that claim. She also attacked the indictment, the statute of limitations, the jury instructions, the sufficiency of the prosecution theory, and the fairness of the sentence itself.
