Mega Edition: Ghislaine Maxwell's Legal Team And Their Closing Argument (9/6/26)
from The Epstein Chronicles · host Bobby Capucci
Ghislaine Maxwell’s defense used its closing argument to tell jurors that prosecutors had turned her into a stand-in for Jeffrey Epstein and were asking them to punish her for his crimes. Her lawyers argued that the government’s case depended too heavily on memories formed decades earlier, inconsistent accounts from accusers, and witnesses whose recollections had changed over time. They stressed that Epstein was the central predator, while Maxwell was being recast as the mastermind of conduct that prosecutors could not directly prove she orchestrated. The defense also attacked the government’s use of old photographs, household routines, massages and social interactions as evidence of grooming, arguing that prosecutors were taking ordinary or ambiguous conduct and assigning sinister meaning to it after the fact. Their core message was that association with Epstein, even a close one, was not enough to establish that Maxwell knowingly joined a conspiracy to recruit and abuse underage girls. The defense also zeroed in on credibility and reasonable doubt, telling jurors that the accusers’ testimony had to be examined carefully rather than accepted simply because the allegations were disturbing. Maxwell’s lawyers highlighted differences between earlier statements and trial testimony, questioned whether some witnesses had financial or legal motives, and argued that the passage of time made reliable reconstruction exceptionally difficult. They urged the jury not to let the horror surrounding Epstein overwhelm the actual burden of proof against Maxwell individually. In essence, the defense framed the case as one in which the government had a dead villain it could no longer prosecute and a living defendant close enough to him to become the substitute target. The jury rejected that argument, convicting Maxwell on five of the six counts she faced. to contact me: [email protected] Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-epstein-chronicles--5003294/support.
