Meister Eckhart was a unique mystic who believed the spark of the divine existed inside every person and God was found within oneself, not outside oneself. A very popular 14th century theologian and preacher, Eckhart's teachings were ultimately deemed heretical by Pope John XXII, who put him on trial for heresy.
