The deal was reportedly pitched directly to Bezos and his then-fiancée Lauren Sánchez during a dinner at Mar-a-Lago in December 2024, shortly after Donald Trump's election victory. This timing coincided with other gestures, such as Bezos contributing to Trump's inaugural fund and The Washington Post (owned by Bezos) declining to endorse a Democratic presidential candidate. Critics have described the arrangement as a "bribe" or an attempt to ingratiate Amazon with the administration, given the unusually high budget for a documentary and Amazon's business interests that could benefit from positive relations with the government. Amazon has denied these suggestions, stating the investment was made because they believed viewers would enjoy the content. Amazon paid Melania Trump's production company $40 million for the rights to the film and a related docuseries, which was $26 million more than the next highest bidder (Disney).
