Melissa A. Fabello: Misconceptions About Feminism and Eating Disorder Recovery

from The Madelyn Moon Show (Previously Mind Body Musings) · host Maddy Moon

Episode 47: Melissa A. Fabello is a sexuality educator, body image and eating disorder activist, and media literacy vlogger based out of Philadelphia, PA. She is a Managing Editor of Everyday Feminism and a PhD student in Human Sexuality Studies, where her research interest is in the effectiveness of current sexuality-focused psychoeducational interventions in eating disorder recovery programs. Why am I so ridiculously excited to release this episode? Most of all because Melissa is an incredibly smart woman. She researches. She experiences. She's open-minded, but at the same time, she firmly stands for what she believes in. There are certain people I interview that I want on the show simply because they are awesome, but the conversation doesn't flow as well because they don't have mind-blowing things to say. That is not the case for this episode. I had a ton of questions to ask her that came from my own heart- things I've been dying to understand. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I do! Here's what we talk about: How Melissa became interested in feminism and sexuality in the first place The definition of feminism Can you be a feminist but also "traditional" when it comes to dating? Misconceptions about feminism in the media How the "bra burning" event isn't true, and what actually happened Breaking down the argument about having a female president such as Mrs. Clinton Why boys stop crying when they reach school-age, while girls continue to express themselves safely Genderization of kids before birth Okay, let's talk about Disney for a sec The actual problem with beauty pageants (no it's not the participant's fault) How Melissa adopted an eating disorder after a breakup Eating disorder management vs. recovery The importance of walking away when you feel triggered Here's where you can connect with Melissa: Website Twitter Tumblr Facebook YouTube Subscribe to the podcast on YouTube: maddymoon.com/youtubepodcast Is it about time you learn how to eliminate your own triggers and start your recovery journey with a group of other like-minded women?
