Memory and Emotion

from The Daily Grateful with Michael Crose · host Michael Crose

Memories are deeply tied to the emotions we feel. Emotional experiences, whether joyful, sad, or even nostalgic, create lasting impressions in our minds. The stronger the emotion, the more vivid the memory becomes. Storytelling, music, and cultural influences all play a role in how we remember things. By intentionally linking emotions to our experiences, we can create more meaningful and lasting memories that shape our lives.

Alrighty then. It's Friday. Oh, what do we do on Fridays? Good morning, Americans.

It's Friday. Yeah, that's right It is Friday. Let us begin the podcast. I'm gonna be talking about a guy that I've talked about before But I just saw him do a short video on YouTube and he inspired me and when I first met him or first encountered him I didn't like him and then after I thought about it.

I did we'll be back The guy's name is Joelle Rivera Him and his wife Natalie have a business called Transformation Academy. You can Google them. You can find all their stuff I saw them speak at a seminar. Oh years ago that they were just one of the speakers and when I saw Joelle talk He made me mad because part of his presentation of their PowerPoint presentation Was a picture of a hospital that he had been in and almost died at and boy I could relate to that because I was in that same damn hospital myself in 2013 and I almost died there and I came back from that whole experience Shaken.

Yeah, I think that's the best way. You know everybody said oh, you're going to have this this, you know New start and life is gonna be great. None of that turned out to be true It was not a new start It was picking up where I left off and with about I don't know 30% of the strength that I had Before I stopped to go through that experience or so I felt and it wasn't a fresh thing So then I saw Joelle J.O. E.L.

Am I pronouncing it right Joelle? I saw him give this presentation and there is a picture that he had it was taken from a beach across the bay To the hospital that he had been in and almost died at I was in the same hospital Here's the fun part then he turned the camera around and he was the picture was taken at their beachfront condo that they had bought after he almost died and they you know went broke and then slowly brought themselves back and So he's talking about that and you know what I did I very politely said you know screw this guy and I got up and I went out into the lobby of the hotel Where the thing was and I started talking to somebody and I just left us with a really bad taste in my mouth But you see I'm one of these people when I listen to someone talk I always just pick up one teeny tiny little thing from their talk and just before I got up and walked out He was talking about how he's in the hospital. He had a hard time breathing. He couldn't walk He couldn't you know do anything by himself.

It was it was pretty bad and he was very depressed and then he said That is when he realized that he had forgot about the power of gratitude And then he went on to talk more and I just kept getting better And as I'm sitting out there in the lobby talking to a friend of mine And we're just chatting the friend got a phone call and I'm just sort of standing there and then I said He forgot about using the power of gratitude. He forgot about using the power of gratitude He forgot and I said shit. I'm gonna forget this So I walked over to the desk at the lobby and I said you have a piece of paper and a pen that I can use Just a small piece of paper and they said sure and they thought I was gonna write somebody's address or something And I wrote about I forgot about the power of gratitude I I I put that in my shirt pocket and I came home and I took the shirt off and you know hung it up it didn't stink bad didn't stink at all and I Forgot about it for a long time and went back to my miserable life My life that was interrupted my life that was just crushed and I said oh Okay, and then one day I needed to wear that shirt again So I put that shirt on in there in the pocket was a piece of paper and piece of paper said I forgot about the power of gratitude and I said And then I just sat in my living room and I just I just cried I just cried And then I said what do I have to be grateful for what in the hell do I have to be grateful for this guy said this? And what in the hell do I have to be grateful for okay?

So then I said okay, let me figure out some things that I'm grateful for and I went over and I grabbed my yellow pad I'm a big yellow pet person and I wrote a number one on it and I wrote I'm glad that I can live at home and continue to work and You know and then I just started you know I'm glad that I can go to the bathroom and poop by myself which for two months. I couldn't Yeah, how's that? I'm sorry about that. I didn't want to give you a visual, but that was the damn truth I mean talk about surrendering your dignity So I was grateful for that.

I was grateful that I had five kids I was grateful that I had grandchildren. I was grateful that you know there were just all of a sudden I Was just grateful and grateful and grateful and all of a sudden I started feeling better and then all of a sudden things started happening and I every morning I just made it a policy to get up and think about what I'm grateful for that day and I still struggle with it. I'm gonna I'm just gonna be totally honest with you Sometimes I I still have a hard time with the woe is me shit and I do I still do but whenever I do I I it just it's just it's it's very irritating. You know what I'm saying?

I later ran into Joel who is at a Podcasting event that I was speaking at and he was talking there and I sat and I listened to him And it all sort of made sense to me and when it was all done I walked up to him and I told him how much I totally had disliked him for such a long time until I pulled that piece of paper out and read it He gave me the biggest hug. He just gave me the biggest hug. So today Then going through a few things You know got a hurricane if you're listening to this on Friday Which you should be the hurricane has come and gone and with any luck I still have a house, you know still have a roof and all that good type of stuff But today on Wednesdays I'm recording this I go to the YouTube and YouTube has something called shorts And I see Joel there and he has a little thing that says changing emotions to change the story Let me share you some of the audio with you emotions play a large role and how we see our current story For example, if I work with an individual and they had a rough day at work all of a sudden everything their life sucks Everything in their journey was bad But if I'm able to shift into a good state of gratitude and happiness all of a sudden They start seeing the positive why neural association our brain triggers memories with our current emotional state And that's actually the best way to trigger memories when an emotional state because we're hardwired to create memories based on emotions and Let's say negative emotions really triggers certain memories and create them very concrete in us So again, I try to put people in a better state when I work with them to truly You know help them create see the story for what it truly is and recreate it for what it is Not because of where they are if they have a rough day or something like that So yeah, that's true If you want to learn more about this go to YouTube and look up transformation academy and from there You can find their website and everything else But I will say when I ran into him at that podcasting convention a few years after my initial seeing him and getting mad at him and all these things He worked with he could tell that I was still stressed He could tell and he gave me this big hug and he totally changed my emotions that day I was on top of the freakin world all day because he changed my emotions and he changed my story It's something to think about okay, if you change your emotions if you physically change your emotions I remember Anthony Robbins I bought his program in the 80s the very first thing where he talks about him And I'm just paraphrasing because this is going from memory That change physically change what you're doing if you're feeling like poop Physically change what you're doing to find yourself happier when Joel saw me at that convention And I was telling him my story about how you know and and he could tell that I was stressed He physically changed my story because he just wrapped his arms around me and gave me a hug so Change your story by doing something physical Maybe you'll pick up your cat and pet your cat. Maybe you'll go hug a grandchild Maybe you'll call your daughter and tell her how much you love her Maybe you'll tell your son how much you appreciate him Maybe you'll go take a nice little walk and feel better Yeah, let's think about that for the Daily Grateful.

I'm Michael crows have terrific day
