Mental Health: The Term & A Holistic Viewpoint

from Raw Conversations with Corinne Blum · host Corinne Blum

Mental Health: the term has come up in more mainstream speak over the last several years and although I acknowledge and respect that having the term helps people de-stigmatise the taboo of therapy (which still exists in some countries and cultures), I want to talk about how staying in the realm of the mental, keeps us in the perspective of viewing ourselves as fragments vs a whole. It keeps us looking at the symptom vs the root cause, the superficial vs the profound, the mental vs the entirety of our human experience which includes the emotional, physical, energetic, spiritual, intuitive, instinctual…I think you get where I’m going with this. We are whole, expansive beings and when we get stuck focusing on just one part of our big and vast beings, we’re limiting our opportunity for true healing and transformation. We have to look at the whole and looking at the whole means that we have to go into the source of our pain and suffering rather than trying to logically or analytically figure out how to get rid of, or make better, the symptom of our experience. Healing happens when we go in and go in deep. It doesn’t happen on the surface and it certainly doesn’t happen when we only focus on resolving the symptoms. Your mental health is a part of your WHOLE health and often our mental state of being is a byproduct of—or at the very least simultaneously experienced vs preceding—our emotional and energetic experience. So from where I’m standing, to call it mental health and mental health alone, is far too limiting a term to encompass what is required for our true health and wellbeing…which requires that we sit with, hold, love and accept the entirety of our whole experience, on all levels.
