Mental Illness in America's Jails

from HearSay with Cathy Lewis · host WHRO Public Media

The Virginian-Pilot, along with students from Marquette University, recently undertook a comprehensive effort to examine what happens to people with mental illness in jails throughout the country. After tracking the deaths of 404 people since 2010, the results were harrowing. Sadly, jails end up as the default treatment for people with mental illness, but law enforcement officials and experts agree that the system is broken. We’ll talk to Gary Harki, the investigative reporter who led the effort.
