Mercy
from North Anderson Baptist Church · host Kyle Caudell
We live in a world that is often quick to judge, slow to forgive, and eager to see people get what they deserve. We can become experts at recognizing the failures of others while conveniently overlooking our own need for grace. But Jesus continues the Sermon on the Mount by calling His followers to something radically different: “Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.” After teaching us to recognize our spiritual poverty, mourn over our sin, humble ourselves before God, and hunger and thirst for righteousness, Jesus now turns our attention outward. Those who have truly experienced the mercy of God cannot remain unchanged by it. Mercy is more than feeling sorry for someone—it moves us to see the needs of others, respond with compassion, and act even when kindness is undeserved. And as we consider what it means to live mercifully, we are reminded that the ultimate example of mercy is Jesus Himself, who did not ignore our sin but bore its judgment on the cross so that undeserving sinners could receive the mercy of God.
