"Meshy" Hernia Repair? Dr. Mistry On Testicular Pain and Swelling After Inguinal Hernia Repairs
from The Armor Men's Health Show · host Dr. Sandeep Mistry and Donna Lee
Thanks for tuning in to the Armor Men’s Health Hour Podcast today, where we bring you the latest and greatest in urology care and the best urology humor out there. In this segment, Dr. Mistry and Donna Lee answer a listener question about swelling after an inguinal hernia repair. Dr. Mistry explains that an inguinal hernia occurs when the intestines or other tissues push through weak spots in the abdominal wall and into cavities near the groin. These naturally occurring cavities form during fetal development when the testicles drop into the scrotum. Importantly, these cavities act as pathways that house many veins and arteries along with other vital structures, like the vas deferens, which together form a sort of "cord" that connects to the testicles. When hernias protrude into that space, mesh is used to tuck them back where they belong and to keep the pathways open for the cord. Unfortunately, some patients react poorly to the mesh and it can adhere to the cord itself, disrupting the connection and causing problems like obstruction of the vas deferens (which carries sperm), build up of fluid around the testicle (called a hydrocele), and/or testicular pain. This reaction can happen even to the best surgeons. Dr. Mistry says this listener has likely developed a hydrocele following his hernia repair. Fortunately, these are easy to fix. If you or someone you love has had a hernia repaired and is experiencing testicular pain or swelling, or has struggled with infertility, please give us a call today for an evaluation.
