Messy Relationships | Scotty Gibbons Matthew 1:18 This is how Jesus the Messiah was born. His mother, Mary, was engaged to be married to Joseph. But before the marriage took place, while she was still a virgin, she became pregnant through the power of the Holy Spirit. (NLT) 1. Be realistic with your expectations. Romans 3:23 – For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. (NIV) 2. Be guarded with your emotions. Matthew 1:19 - Joseph, her fiancé, was a good man and did not want to disgrace her publicly, so he decided to break the engagement quietly. (NLT) Proverbs 12:16 – A fool is quick-tempered, but a wise person stays calm when insulted. (NLT) Proverbs 19:11 – Sensible people control their temper; they earn respect by overlooking wrongs. (NLT) 3. Be intentional with your interaction. Matthew 1:19 - Joseph, her fiancé, was a good man and did not want to disgrace her publicly, so he decided to break the engagement quietly. (NLT) Matthew 1:20-23 As he considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. “Joseph, son of David,” the angel said, “do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. For the child within her was conceived by the Holy Spirit. And she will have a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” All of this occurred to fulfill the Lord’s message through his prophet: “Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel, which means ‘God is with us.’” (NLT) Colossians 3:12-13 - 12 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13 Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. (NIV) Matthew 6:14-15 - 14 For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins. (NIV) Philippians 2:1-4 - Are your hearts tender and compassionate? 2 Then make me truly happy by agreeing wholeheartedly with each other, loving one another, and working together with one mind and purpose. 3 Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. 4 Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too. (NLT) Romans 12:18 - 18 If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. (NIV)
