Ittai's devotion was to leave everything to follow after King David...and this was done as a foreigner to the people and plan of God. He counted devotion to the King as the highest and most noble of privileges that he could obtain. It was this attitude of thankfulness that allowed Ittai to be a man who climbed through the ranks of the army to be a general on behalf of the King he was so dedicated to serve.
