La Lista Clinton, creada en 1995 por el Departamento del Tesoro de Estados Unidos a través de la Oficina de Control de Activos Extranjeros (OFAC), nació para sancionar a personas y organizaciones vinculadas al narcotráfico y al lavado de dinero, incluyendo en sus inicios a los capos colombianos del Cartel de Cali y del Norte del Valle. Con el tiempo, esta lista se ha ampliado para incluir a grupos armados, funcionarios corruptos y hasta presidentes, como Nicolás Maduro en 2017. Hoy, la noticia que sacude a Colombia es la inclusión del presidente Gustavo Petro, su esposa Verónica Alcocer, su hijo Nicolás Petro y el ministro Armando Benedetti, acusados por Washington de vínculos con el narcotráfico y con el régimen venezolano. Estar en la Lista Clinton implica sanciones severas como el congelamiento de activos, restricciones financieras y prohibición de viajes a Estados Unidos.
