ترك أو تُرّك جميل فلسطين في عمر السنة ونصف عام 1948 وكان آنذاك رضيعًا بين ذراعي والدته إيلين التي اختارت ألّا تترك فلسطين يومًا رغم انتقالها إلى الأردن. انتقل عام 1948 مع والده خليل ووالدته إيلين وإخوته إلى الأردن. وسافر للعمل في السعودية والكويت في عمر الـ 16 سنة وهاجر إلى أستراليا في عمر الـ 23 سنة.
