Miami University to Grow Coral on Virginia Key | Miami News

The University of Miami is set to launch a bold coral farming initiative on Virginia Key, transforming a half-acre park into a reef restoration hub — with the goal of growing and planting coral to protect Miami’s coastlines and boost local economies worth billions. The university will manage the facility, train county staff, and develop K-12 marine education programs, all while partnering with Miami-Dade County to meet ambitious reef recovery targets. This project isn’t just about science — it’s about safeguarding jobs, tourism, and coastal resilience, and now awaits approval from a county committee.
