【鏡花怪異譚】明治28年発表。「妙の宮」と呼ばれる山中の社に夜遅く肝試しに訪れた、美しい少年士官。空まで続くような石段を登る半ばで、懐の金時計が鎖だけ残して消えていることに気づく。山深い古社に湧き出る山清水。月明かりに浮かび上がる石段。社を守るように現れる蟹や蛇。社殿に至り拝すると、回廊には幼い子供が手に金時計を持って遊んでいるのだったーーー。
