First Thing is First | The City of Johannesburg is investigating a foul odour that had enveloped parts of Johannesburg after residents complained that a smell akin to sulphur or rotten eggs hung in the air.    The terrible state of the city’s air is not a new occurrence. The city experienced a terrible stench that raised several health risk concerns in 2021. A week went by with the same smell. The last time the City was enveloped by a stench, it was believed to have been the result of a combination of elevated levels of sulphur dioxide and hydrogen sulphide from a Sasol plant in Mpumalanga. The World Health Organisation reports that air pollution killed about 20 000 South Africans in 2013.
