Michigan vs Penn State Reaction + Analysis | College Football 2023

Michigan Football continues its undefeated season, National Championship and Big Ten Championship hopes after beating the Top 10 Penn State Nittany Lions 24-15. Again, Penn State Football failed to beat the Michigan Wolverines or the Ohio State Buckeyes under James Franklin. The Wolverines won this game because their staff, led by offensive coordinator, offensive line coach, and interim head coach Sherrone Moore, made elite adjustments on the fly. Quarterback JJ McCarthy was 7-8 for 60 yards and he also had 43 rushing yards on the ground. Most previews predicted that McCarthy would win this game for Michigan, but that was not the case. Instead, Blake Corum and Donovan Edwards led Michigan's rushing attack to 227 yards and 3 touchdowns, making Michigan the only team to rush for over 200 yards on Penn State over the past two seasons (they also ran for 418 yards in 2022). Michigan's defense also shut out Penn State for the first 28 minutes of the second half and held Drew Allar to under 4 yards per pass attempt and under 100 passing yards. For Penn State, this loss is demoralizing. The Nittany Lions had 7 tackles for loss and were able to pressure JJ McCarthy early, but their man blitz scheme was exploited for big gains on the ground. Manny Diaz is coaching one of the best defenses in the country, and it is being wasted by an offense that has a less explosive passing attack than Iowa's.
