Microscopy for Beekeepers S1:E34

from Beekeeping - Short and Sweet · host Stewart Spinks

Learn all about getting started in Microscopy for Beekeepers. During the long, cold Winter months it's nice to have something beekeeping related to turn to just to keep building on the knowledge gained in the season just ended. Microscopy is an excellent way to learn new skills and learn more about how our honeybees function. It is also a way of being able to self-diagnose some disease issues without having to wait for help or the following Spring when the bees become active again. Nosema is one of the diseases you'll be able to identify and after a little practice, it takes very little time. The identification of pollen is one of the fun aspects of microscopy for beekeepers, again it's a simple technique once practiced a few times and can open up a world of fascinating shapes and structures. It will also allow you to identify what plants your bees have been foraging on. All in all it's a great "Off Season" hobby that will enhance your beekeeping and see out those long Winter months as we wait to start over with our beekeeping in the Spring.
