Cecil Roughtrade hat das "MIDAS"-Projekt entwickelt, eine Technik zur Aufzeichnung menschlicher Persönlichkeiten und, wie sich später herausstellt, auch zur Produktion von Kopien aus Fleisch und Blut. Auf Grund unbefriedigender Ergebnisse wurde dieses Regierungsprojekt jedoch gekippt. Roughtrade arbeitet nun auf eigene Rechnung und verkauft Kopien von Wissenschaftlern in Schlüsselstellungen an Dritte-Welt-Länder. Pete Kirk ist ihm aus persönlichen Motiven auf der Spur. Er erlebt unter Lebensgefahr alle Ungeheuerlichkeiten, - sei es auf wirtschaftlichem, politischem oder psychologischem Gebiet - deren Wurzel die skrupellose Anwendung der Erfindung ist.
