Mihi: Ngā Pōito-o-Te Kupenga O Taramainuku - Islands of the Hauraki Gulf

Nau mai haere mai welcome to this podcast series Ngā pōito-o-te kupenga o Taramainuku - Islands of the Hauraki Gulf. Polynesian voyagers to Aotearoa bought with them the aute or mulberry plant from the Islands. The only place it ended up thriving was in Hauraki and subsequently is celebrated in Māori oral history as a symbol of the fertility and desirability of Tikapa Moana, the Hauraki Gulf. It’s this desirability that has attracted many peoples over the years to its shores, since the earliest days of the explorations of voyagers like Kupe and Toi through to Auckland’s most recent immigrants. The gulf is many things to many peoples. It’s a place of work a place to relax Generations of people have visited and indeed lived on the many wonderful islands of the Hauraki Gulf. They were fishing for kai moana, farming, hunting. picnicking, and enjoying the water sports the region is famous for. Unfortunately these activities had a devastating effect on the environment but impressive progress has been made to alleviate this damage. Armies of volunteers and workers have transformed Tiritiri Matangi, Motutapu, Motuihe and Rotoroa islands from degraded, pest-ridden pasturelands to lush indigenous forest areas where endangered birds and other species are now flourishing.
