Mike Callander "Dance on Speakers" Mix November 2009

from The Likes Of You Podcast · host TheLikesOfYou

Mike Callander is one of Australia’s most dynamic DJs, an innovative producer and remixer, and founder of the exciting new Australian record label, Haul Music. After starting his own techno club, Fokus, in 2001, Mike achieved instant infamy for his genre-bending musical selections and an approach to DJing that was both versatile and unique. Within a few years he was warming up or touring alongside just about every techno DJ to visit Australia, and in Melbourne he has since held long term residencies at a range of sought-after clubbing institutions such as Sunny, Nano, Ffour, and perhaps most notably at Honkytonks (for which he also recorded a mix CD “The Last Dance” that made its way into record stores across the world in 2006). Since then Mike has toured all across Australia and New Zealand, and as far afield as Berlin, Los Angeles, Madrid and Malaysia, playing alongside artists as diverse as Mathew Jonson, Michael Mayer, Radioslave, Luciano, Booka Shade, Trentemoeller, Locodice, Matthew Dear, Stacey Pullen, Agoria (at Berlin's Watergate), M.A.N.D.Y (both in Melbourne and Berlin), and Mr C (in Melbourne and Berlin). Mike’s DJing has also earned accolades from countless touring international artists, with many labelling him one of Australia's finest - most notably Get Physical’s DJ T., who invited Mike to play in Berlin at his anniversary event to celebrate 20 years of DJing. Currently Mike holds no less than three Saturday night residencies: Poison Apple, New Guernica, and his exciting new 5-hour marathon “High Tea” morning set at the instantly-infamous Sorry Grandma!. On other nights Mike is also called upon to lend his talents to the decks (and the dancefloors) at events such as Sneakerpeeps and The Likes Of You. Outside the clubs, Mike has made numerous appearances on radio such as Triple J's Mix Up (both as a guest and monthly resident DJ), and on Melbourne’s Kiss FM. However, his current focus (when not dancing on speakers and causing chaos in the clubs) is in the studio, both as an artist and remixer for his own label, Haul Music (alongside Craig McWhinney and Christian Vance), and as a co-producer for some of Melbourne’s exciting new bands (including The Queen’s Head, the side project for SubAudible Hum frontman, Danny Griffith).
