Hello, my host. Great to have you on the radio show. We have not talked since the Micah Parsons trade. Here we are about what four or five days later on Thursday, Thursday.
What's your reaction to Jerry Jones crying uncle and moving Micah Parsons to Green Bay for a defensive tackle of the two first rounders? Well, I think the catalyst for the trade was the reality. Stare down to get to the point where Micah Parsons was either not going to play, citing his back injury or the Cowboys were going to get rough with him and threaten to find or spend him for conduct at the momentum of the team if he refused to practice and claim advance the week one game. And when he declined to plan for the 50-year option, which is what I think they wanted him to do all along, they didn't want to have to pay him on a long-term deal.
They wanted to keep the candidate next year. They traded him. Now, the problem with creating him in late August is that you don't get as much as you would have gotten if you traded him in March. Look at what the Texans did in early 2022.
When they were trading a guy who didn't want to be there, they didn't want him. He hadn't played in an entire year. He had 20-plus civil lawsuits pending against him alleging sexual misconduct during the Sutter Precession. And they created a competition.
And the banks, the Panthers, the Falcons, and the Browns all came to the table. And they had to be pre-approved to even talk to him. And look at what the Texans got. Re-first round picks and more.
That's the Cowboys could have done. The Cowboys could have set up an auction basically for the Micah Parsons contract. They could have had multiple teams come to the table. They could have named their price.
They could have come out of the draft. The Travis Hunter. They could have come out of the draft. They could have come out of the draft.
They would have been a car. But they have now two first round draft picks. That probably will be late first round draft picks because the Packers are probably going to be pretty good. Are you going to get a superstar late round one?
Well, you can package it with your own pick. But then what did you really got? So I think it was a huge mistake by the Cowboys and this management at every level and as I tweeted and he needed to have to match the trade. It's hard to help off answers and not themselves the thing they love.
That's where they have it. And if you can set that aside as a Cowboys fan, you absolutely should boycott the team this year and maybe continuously until Jerry Jones sells, which of course he and his son, Steve, you're never going to do it. I've never heard of an L5's fastest joint sprain in a back before. But is it potential that the Packers got a lemon in Micah Parsons?
I am skeptical about the severity of the injury. Now, there very well may be an L5's fastest joint sprain in Micah Parsons back. But if he had the contract that he wanted, he would have been practicing and getting ready to play. This is something that Don Don, he was right around the Hall of Fame, Damian Canton.
I was talking to people about the various holdings out there. And you've got the guys who were deliberately holding in, citing their contract. Well, that never ends well unless you get a new deal. But you got to go back to work some day like him.
Hey, we're dead in Pittsburgh, like Trey Henderson did in Cincinnati. You got to do the deal and go back to work. But if you're citing an injury and you're not just facing injury, when you've been playing football for 15 or 20 years, there's something on you that if you really focus on it, yeah, you know, and if you don't have an answer to security, there's any increased risk because of that injury to your long-term playing ability. Without that contract, you're justified to say, hey, I'm not putting myself at risk.
I don't have security. I carry the risk of injury. Until I get a new contract that's just the injury risk to the team, well, I'm not going to play. So I think that there's a law in the current system.
And one of the things I've told in the aftermath of the Parsons deal, I'm going to be in the next CBA to beef up the rights of the teams when it comes to these holding and based on supposed injuries. Now, good luck coming up with a reliable system, but they'll try to do something because if the players are willing to do it, they have more power than anyone realize. Yeah. Well, Mike Florio is with us.
And Mike, you know, Thursday, obviously, as the Eagles Cowboys Friday Chargers chiefs from Brazil will have both those games here on KJR. I'm just wondering what the window is like for Kansas City. Do they have one more run, one more championship run in them? Or is this current iteration of chief football, you think kind of coming to an end?
No window closes until someone closes it. So who's going to close it in the AFC? Now, look, the Eagles may very well slam it shut again if they would get together in the Super Bowl, but to get to the Super Bowl or not, you need to either beat everyone else or someone else needs to beat you. So until someone beats the Chiefs in the playoffs, I don't care about the regular season.
Now, if the regular season is important, you play weekend and we got you in the playoffs, you can play off, you can get home, you got to get out of here. But then that always has the window when we morph into postseason mode. And your whole season comes down to 60 minutes. And if you're the Bills or the Ravens, or the Texans, or the Texans, or the Chiefs, you feel a little tight, you feel a little woozy, you feel a little nervous.
The Chiefs feel fine, the Chiefs thrive on those moments. Somebody got to beat them in that setting in order to end this. Unless the next team beats them in the regular season that they don't even get to the playoffs. So let's not be crazy about that.
Injury could be a factor as well. That could change the team's fortunes. But that window doesn't close until someone gets off their ass, walks over to the wall, pushes the window down and slams it on the Chiefs. Mike, you rank the Hawks 18th in your first power rankings.
What interested me the most even more than the rankings was the comment. Here was your quote, Jalen Millro will have a package of plays with the first team. What does the season tell it will be more than a package? Do you really think Jalen Millro will unseat Sam Darnold in the near future?
Well, I thought it was interesting. It might be Donald a week or so ago, but to its lead to the activity, the idea of having a first team reps package for Jalen Mill. And that may have just been to force opponents to waste time anticipating what the Jalen Millro package will be. So that's less time than prepare for Sam Darnold.
But I didn't say that everything was done with Landon Seattle. We saw the details on the contract. The one-year deal with a team held option for next year as a practical matter. And it's not going to be as easy as it was last year for Sam Darnold.
Sam Darnold had no viable replacement in Minnesota. J.J. McCarthy was after the year. They put him on IR.
He was done. He was shut down. It was Nick Mullins or Sam Darnold. So when Donald's had rough stretches and he did, they had a tour of the AFC South.
He was horrible against the Jack Mill Jaguars. And look, he was spectacular most of the year. But he had a really rough stretch. If you have to worry about getting bench, maybe you don't wheel your way out of it.
Or you don't even get the chance to turn it around. I think that things are going to be a little tighter for him. He's going to have that collapse, especially from the Lions game week 18 on his mind. If he starts to struggle, he's going to worry.
Are they going to go to Drew Lock or Jalen Millro? I think they really like Jalen Millro. And I know they won't want to put him out there until he's ready. But there seems to be a fascination with what they have in Jalen.
Or even more than the fascination with what they have with Russell Wilton now. It was different because Wilson won a starting job. But I feel like they think they got themselves a steal in Millro. And every concert, some level, an organizational interest, improving to everyone.
And themselves, they got it right. So I think that all conspires to make it very difficult for Sam Darnold. He's going to have to step up. I'm not saying he can't.
He's going to be great in that game in Seattle. He had moments where he was as good as any quarterback in the NFL last year. Yeah. I call you have a this year's different.
Mike, before you go, you mentioned Russell Wilson there. And I saw where the Giants un I guess unofficially are listening, whatever unofficially means Jackson Dart is their backup quarterback to Russell Wilson. And I'm looking at the Giants schedule and man that poor bastard, Mr Unlimited. Yeah.
Commander's Cowboys, Chiefs, Chargers in the first four games of the year. Honestly, how long until Russell Wilson is backing up Jackson Dart in New York? One thing that I was encouraged by watching Russell Wilson in the preseason, he seems to have finally realized he's not as young as he used to be. He's self aware as to his limitations.
You don't seem trying to do things that he no longer can do. So he leans into his strengths. And man, he's got a beautiful beat ball down the middle of one of those preseason games. And as long as he doesn't try to run away from pressure when he used to be able to and now he can, he gets rid of the ball, makes quick decisions, processes, et cetera.
He can hang on to the job. But it was 21 years ago that the Giants bench current won our future Hall of Famer when they were five and four because they thought the only man who was ready. So it's a giant, you never know what they're going to do. And that makes it very interesting to see how it plays out.
But the Giants, what else they could do, they could just be on official. They could do the bill, they'll check that start and just put out a piece of paper with all the positions and no names on. That worked. How about that?
Well, we'd be remiss if we didn't get your thoughts on last night. I know it's a college game. Sorry, but we got to get a couple seconds from you on Bill, Bill getting blown apart by TCU. I watched all of it.
I was fascinated by it. Look at some president, a guy who's been an NFL coach for a half a century, washes out of the league. Nobody wants him. He takes a college job with this attitude.
He and Michael Embardi have this attitude that they're better than the NFL. Not that the NFL is interested in his BS anymore. And they bring in 70 new players in the era of NI. You can go after any player you want.
Go get whoever you want. Get to pick the right players. That's what Nick Saban said last year. Your SOL, if you don't pick the right players with the money that you have and for as good as that first drive looks, it was ugly.
It was brutal. And I look at those guys and it's like, you know, it doesn't matter how much you coach them off. He just doesn't have a player. And there was one moment where they cut away from it.
They didn't cut away to him nearly as much as they would have. But there was one kind of way where the look on his face made me think that he was just kind of like, yeah, you know, I was right. I had a feeling it was going to happen like this. And I was right.
I still got it. I still know. I still know when I got a team full of flappy and that's what I got. And that's how it looks so far.
And now we're going to change the tire on the moving car. They got 20 hours per week of explosion. You kids, they're going to get them ready to clean up their fundamentals and for the next opponent. Good news is the schedule is not all that daunting.
But man, last night was ugly as I've seen it for double check. More points than he's ever given up in his entire career as a head coach. That was an iron man. Hey, have fun this week.
Enjoy it. And we'll talk to you next Wednesday. I appreciate it. I appreciate it.
