In this episode, we trace the sweeping evolution of the Ottoman Empire’s armed forces from their roots in late-13th-century nomadic cavalry warfare to a complex, modern military that endured until 1922, highlighting key transformations such as the rise of the Janissaries as one of the world’s first standing infantry forces to wield firearms, the empire’s early and effective use of gunpowder and massive artillery for conquest, and the expansion into naval power and even early military aviation.
