Matt hi Matt You sent us a very nice email with a subject title back to your heart You know who you are Matt are I guess I'll leave your your full-ass name private in case you're like that's crazy You don't give my full-ass name away You never know and if you want me to say your full-ass name feel free to drop that in the comments on Instagram The point is Matt you sent a very nice email with a request to hear back to your heart which is a loose song for dinosaur jr and He says here in the email that he very nice He said he had the privilege of seeing you play in north Charleston in a backyard And that he requested it then as well and you played it and he says it's your favorite It's his favorite Lubarlo song and he would like to hear the song again and hear some of the history of the song So that's what we're here today to do folks Back to your heart from the dinosaur junior album beyond okay, like 2007 all right, so I think soon you're gonna play it I'm gonna play the song for you accuse I'm gonna I'm gonna acoustic Oh That's allergies no, it's not it's only fair that you have a cough on here. I went through a Sinus infection I went through coughing here coughing there coffee everywhere you got some issues with coughing I do you do yeah They're currently we've really worked at that we figured out all kinds of ways to remedy it and I think that we've been successful Well right now I'm not coughing no There's been times where I thought possibly you could never stop coughing for the rest of your life And I had to really ought to be like okay.
Well, this is going to be it you It's gonna be coughing from here on now So you have to really like talk yourself through this as your as my husband you're like okay Well, I'm just gonna have to tolerate coughing now my childhood was full of like fun facts like you know world records And I heard I heard and there was a show called real people that would have just these vignettes of people and their strange lies Was really like it's all that save that for another day Oh, oh back to you wait wait don't don't start playing it. I'm gonna take video of you playing it I might headband on so my secret life. It is not secret Lou Bartles headband is so far from me to stop wearing headbands publicly It just confuses people. Oops.
Well here. We are Headband on back to your heart my crown of thorns. This is this is from Are you told you what it was from tell us again cuz I'm kicking video the dice or junior record beyond? Our first reunion record.
I'd been out of the band for decades I came back and this was my first contribution Back to the band Ashes stained windows cells and punk rock boys me Girls see the family lose their minds think about a valley from time to time Little sweet things. I've never been happy that we love but I would leave again for you Back to your heart back to your back to your heart You're the only one that is shedding some so I'll wait for you No Tending me then tell me what you want and I will try to be Everywhere I think about the future never passed on why you're my shining son the summer comes and I leave again My headband was moving slowly down my forehead through my performance. Oh dear. Oh gosh Oh dear what no that I had been heard me talking poorly about it.
I had bands like oh, yeah I'm coming for you. Listen man. I keep your hair out of your face all day long. Yeah, why you gotta talk shit about me?
What's one I help you? Yeah surrender surrender to the headband Man's did such a bad my hair is so long right now Well, we're gonna do something about that. We are very soon. That's a very good haircutter.
I believe thank you Thanks, I do, you know I do a pretty good job when I just make I make a series of ponytails And then just cut the hands off that is one of the funniest things when you do that when I watch I love walking into the bathroom when you've got a little be in your bonnet and next thing You know your hairs and pigtails and you're like with a little pair of scissors and I'm like, uh-huh. Yep Well, I am I forward. I have my long hair and this fits my glen dancing lock One in the front of my face which I cut the end of that and then the two to two on the side Yeah, well that works really well. Well, that was a spirited cover of back to your heart.
Are you are you beating yourself up about it? You look like here. I don't know I just I always beat myself up about anytime any live performance of any song But I do I really enjoy doing it really like playing live love the you know singing and opening up my lungs Especially when I'm not feeling quite a hundred percent and I love it But then but after I end and it pretty much every time I'm like, oh, it's too bad I should have done better. Oh, yeah, I still like it.
Okay, so it's not it's not hard. Yeah I'm just critical. Yeah, well, you know, that's I suppose that's probably a good thing actually because what if you're just like and done, you know That was awesome Really really really nailed that one. It's good to keep striving for more and better.
That's one for the archives right there. Oh Take that and everybody. Oh, yeah Did you see how great I am did you did you hear it? Yeah, so I wrote that's all I was the first I started to make a reunion record which I thought was like wildly that was wildly unexpected I mean the reunion was pretty unexpected but to do an album on top of that.
I was like whoa So I wrote that song I don't it was before I was really documenting my my demo So I don't I couldn't find the original demo, but um before I was documenting them well Let's say anyway So I but I really wanted the song to be up about coming back to the band like back to your heart It's kind of like about coming back to Western because then I Actually was kind of interesting because I lived in Los Angeles at the time and I would fly back here starting in 2005 and I would like stay at my parents house, you know, sleeping in my old bedroom I mean not my I'm we I lived all over that house like there's no bedroom preserved of lubarlo You know, I didn't really have like a a bedroom with you know, I mean, yeah There's there was no time capsule lubarlo time capsule in this house. They moved they moved through me I moved through them anyway. I went back to stay with my parents and I live with them for a couple of weeks while we made the record So it was a real return and I remember being in the attic where I wrote all of my early songs in the attic going up there to write To try to find the right vocal line for the song because it the song I really fought against singing a very literal Vocal line because it's got a very strong And and and and and and and and and and my impulse was to follow that but I knew that I had to go outside of that and Approach the song and come up with a vocal line that was unrelated to the bass line and the guitar part So did you write the guitar part? Yeah, I mean, I kind I knew what the guitar parts were Jay worked off of them.
So Jay plays guitar I mean, I really it really came together really well I have to say I really I it's a very churning sea chanity kind of song The way that I play the bass more or less like a guitar in that song so I could just create this kind of churning thing and I could really sing to it and Easily sing to it because it's hard to play bass properly the way that bass really is properly played Paul McCartney So and then sing on top of it. Mm-hmm. Paul McCartney is a brilliant bass player. I don't know he played bass.
Oh He plays everything. I mean, I just didn't know that was his instrument. I mean, he's pretty much He's already played in the Beatles. It is man.
Yeah, he played a bass. It was called a Hoffner bass. It looked kind of like a big violin Great. He's an amazing bass player.
That's neat. And he's a great singer. So he does he can do anything He's done solo records where he plays I think pretty much all the instruments. Uh-huh.
He's you know, he's a I heard that Bob Dylan was very Intimidated by how talented he was and Bob Dylan pretty much said that he was the most talented person he'd met. I think Shut up. I will say this about Paul McCartney. I feel like he has a nice smile.
That's nice Yeah, like I know so little really about him, but I'm always like what a nice smile on that gentleman. That's cool Yeah, I feel like he has a really cool aura like his his vibe seems real nice It's nice to hear you say something nice about a beetle. I know that's that's true I don't usually offer that but that's oh that's how I feel anyway I think I told the story like I like I like that song live by the way at when you guys play it as nice or Yeah, yeah music may Monday concludes Thank you for listening
