Welcome to Raw Impressions, Mondays, music, mini episode. Who's going to say something first? You. I did.
You're the winner. Ding ding. Hi, Louis. Hi, Del.
Hi. Yep. Folks, it's kind of kind of yucky outside. It's, I don't know what the weather is like where you live, but here in Greenfield, Massachusetts, Western Mass, it is overcast and drippy and wet and a little bit snowy.
I still haven't had to use the snow blower yet. That's true. It's still parked underneath our collapsing deck. Yeah.
I did pull it to the front of the line. I pulled the lawnmower out, the snow blower out, and the lawnmower in, and the snow blower. So they've changed where they're at in line. Oh, good.
So, yes, the order, the stations have been changed. Yes, that's good. So you are prepared in case this great snowfall does happen here. It has yet to happen.
We have yet to have a significant snowfall. We are having the opposite, really, of what my folks are having in Wisconsin. We are in the western, very western most part of the state dumped on literally snow like as high as the car. It's pretty wild.
It's cold there. It's also very cold there. It's further north than here, I believe. Although, what do I know?
Do I know anything? Let's get out the map. Wait, we don't have a map. Although we have phones which operate as maps, cameras, computers.
Recording devices. Recording devices. Yep. A little stereo systems.
So I have a new song for you this week. Excellent. I've been composed another song and recorded it on my trusty, Porto I cassette, Fort track. And it's again, two minutes, two minutes, 20 seconds long, which is about where the average of these songs because I know that you've said it to me before.
A song doesn't really need to be anymore than about two minutes. So I'm going, I'm using that. That's nice. I also, I'm sitting here smiling because I like that you said I have another song for you.
And so it made me feel like I felt kind of special. I was like, oh! Comancing in five notes. Oh, here we go.
Okay. Two minutes, 20 seconds baby. I'm going to say it. It might be a perfect song.
What? You like it? I like it a lot. Really?
Yeah, I'm a little emotional over here. So what's the name of that song? Does it have a name? I thought I could call it Good Times.
Because there's a lot of, I like songs that are called Good Times. They're usually good. Can you tell me the lyrics of that song? Do you have them written down?
I do? Do you want me to read them? I kind of wanted you to read them. Oh, okay.
There's no limit to what I can give to you. I'd walk the streets at night if you weren't by my side. I'm here for Good Times. Show me your way.
I'm here for Good Times and I'm going to stay. Only inches from, only a lifetime through and what we could become. The future bends to you. I'm here for Good Times.
Show me your way. And then it says, I'm going to feel it. I'm going to focus. I'm going to do it our way.
And I'm never lost. I'm only slow today. Yesterday was kind of, I finished it yesterday and yesterday was an interesting day. Oh, I really, I really like that.
Really? Yeah. Oh, I was preparing for the episode today and when I listened to it, I thought that's okay. That's a song that I would go repeat, repeat, repeat.
Wow. Yeah. Like I was not expecting that. Really?
Mm-hmm. I feel like what I'm trying to do, I was thinking God yesterday. I wanted, I was having fun trying to really get my voice upfront with this kind of very like, I was, I was trying to think, I mean, it does obviously not Lee Hazelwood, but I love that kind of grand lush and I love the very important Stentorian. I think that's a word.
But just like this big vocal. Like I want to really, because I was singing quite loudly. A lot of these new songs that I'm doing, I'm actually singing really loud. I do them.
And that's the first one that I've done in my actual voice pitch because I like to mess around with the bass and the pitch on the foretrack because you can change the tape speed. Oh really? But that one is purely on, on tune, on time. It hasn't been, it wasn't doctored in any way in that way.
I'm glad you like it. I like it a lot. Okay. Yeah.
I was just like, dang, you need an album, a new album. That would be so good on an album. I'm having such a good time having a reason to make up a song every week. Mm-hmm.
And I think because I'm doing it for you and for us and for this podcast, which is really, the podcast is kind of, it's for you and I really. It's just, it's giving me such structure to my day. My day is, I've been really enjoying this new year so far. And two.
And I'm going to try to do a song a week, as long as I can. We're leaving kind of soon. We're going to go to California. Yeah, we're going.
At the end of February. Back to Los Angeles for almost two weeks. Two solid weeks. I have some work with Dinosaur Junior.
Mm-hmm. And I, but we're just going to go back and enjoy where we used to live. Yeah, my work will be enjoying it. What?
It was Izzy. She was laughing. Oh good. It's okay.
Izzy gets home. Yeah. We got a two-inch snow day today. Two inches of snow day today today.
Were you going to sing me the David Crosby song? I know. I want to do this. David Crosby passed away yesterday.
Yeah. I... We're recording this on Friday. Yeah.
I covered a David Crosby song with Sabadeau years ago. Mm-hmm. This beautiful song called Everybody's Been Burned. One of my favorite songs, the Birds are, I adore the Birds.
Yes, me too. And David Crosby was a member of the Birds early on. Mm-hmm. And the record that everybody's been burned is from, it's called Younger Day.
Five D has this other amazing song that I've always wanted to cover and I think it's today's the day. I would love them. So this is my... And you're going to do this live.
I'm going to do this live. Cool. I'm going to turn on this other microphone. So this is a...
I'm going to get a little... Ooh, that's closer to that mic. Well, it's okay. It's taking up the room.
Okay. I don't know who you think you are. I don't know what you're doing here. And I don't know what's going on here.
And I don't know how it's supposed to be. And how they guess notion. Who's it is? And what it's all for.
I'm not crying. I laugh in mostly, as you can see. I like imagining the birds in the studio. in the studio when they recorded that song and him just doing the first those four verses and then literally walking out the studio door like onto the sunset strip.
He was a real character. I read a lot about him. I'm reading even more about him right now. He's in that book about Dennis Hopper.
Fantastic. That song. I swear to god. That's I mean there's such a I mean it's it's punk for lack of a better word and I also because I've read quite a bit about him I know that there was a big thing with the birds that they they all wrote songs except for the drummer but it was Gene Clark heavy heavy songwriters like Gene Clark an incredible songwriter arguably the best songwriter in the birds.
Gene Clark, Roger McGwin, David Crosby and they all competed on these records to have their own songs on the records because that's how you get the money. So you get the publishing. So imagining him bringing this song into the studio and going like because it's just you know I don't know who you think you are. I don't know what you're doing here.
I don't know what's going on. I mean it's like here I'm done. That's my contribution. Give me the publishing.
I mean they kicked him out of the band shortly after this. You don't know that. And in the same sessions you did a song called Triad where he's trying to convince his girl to have a 3 way. That's simplified.
I mean it's and then everybody's been burned which is one of the most important records ever recorded. But the way his voice floats over the top of the music I mean yeah I always it felt very risky to do everybody's been burned with Sabado and I did it and I think over the years I just was like oh it's terrible it's not very good and I'm like how could I how could I have ever done that? you know but then someone told me that they'd interview me. Oh my god that's it.
