Mining in Africa

from African Dialogue · host Channel Africa

There are a multiple challenges in the mining industry on the African continent. They can be outlined on a long list ranging from scarcity of energy in the Democratic Republic of Congo to the illegal mining of diamonds in Zimbabwe to questions of ownership in mining companies in South Africa; this list goes on and on. Adding to this problem is the intense use of automation in mining which threatens many jobs in the industry. Experts are also of the view that with these challenges investors are also finding new ways to invest in less intensive mining projects. To assist us on this project we are joined on the line by: • Dr Ola Bello, resource governance expert. • Dr Vuyo Mjimba, a Chief Research Specialist at the Human Sciences Research Council.
