Mining Indaba

from General Podcast · host Channel Africa

The mining indaba is taking place in New Castle, KwaZulu Natal a town devastated and impoverished because of historical coal mining. Robby Mokgalaka, Groundwork's coal campaigner says ironically the meeting is being hosted in areas where there were recent forced removals to make way for mining. Mokgalaka says his organisation is of the opinion that mining in the area will not be meaningfully discussed because community participation has been restricted. And that the case is a clear example that mining does not bring development, instead it thtreatens the livelihoods of thriving sustainable communities.
