Called 'The Father of History', Herodotus was born about 484 BC in Greece - about the time of the battle of Thermopylae and the Persian invasion of Greece. (The one from '300'!) He grew up in the shadow of the Persian invasion. As a child he heard stories of the war and the heroism of the Greeks, daring to stand against a force as enormous and terrifying as the Persian horde. He knew it was a significant moment in history, one which people would wonder and argue about for centuries; about the forces and causes and motives behind each of the moving parts - not only what happened, but WHY? That's what I love about Herodotus; the passion and curiosity. And the wider context within which he saw what he was writing. Tune in to hear more about Herodotus, as well as some thoughts on why we all need to be a little more like him!
