Minister of Gender and Children’s Affairs of Sierra Leone – Manti Tarawalli

This week on Womanity-Women in Unity, Dr. Amaleya Goneos-Malka talks to the Minister of Gender and Children’s Affairs of Sierra Leone, Minister Manti Tarawalli who shares how her formative years led her to pursue a life of service and make a difference to the lives of people in Sierre Leone. To accelerate gender equality, we discuss the importance of demonstrating the benefits of gender equality to men, for them to understand that an empowered woman does not mean a disempowered man, it means a better socio-economic community. We also consider the role of women in power and Minister Tarawalli described Sierra Leone’s recently launched gender equality policy as a key milestone to ensure the gender equality doesn’t regress in the country. Part of this policy aims to increase women’s representation in politics to a minimum of 30%, to apply gender budgeting across government institutions and the creation of a fund for women entrepreneurs. Minister Tarawalli reminds us that women need to come together, to speak with one voice and urge their governments to make gender equality a law in order achieve gender equality by 2030.
