I have not been to Minnesota in probably 20 years. Brank, yes. These guys survived the David Conner of Dibberwolz Basketball and lived to tell about it. It's Flakrant House.

Well, Judd, and at this rate, Charles Barkley may not be coming back to Minnesota at any time. This year, as the Wolves fall 1-16 to 1-07 in Game 3, and they are now on the brink of elimination, another absolute nail-biter down the stretch here, and another game in which Luca Donchich and Kyrie Irving and Company are just masterful executors of whatever they want to do on offense. The Wolves are cluster bleepy down the stretch. So many things to talk about here, Sports Dad.

Your main takeaway. By the way, Positive Phil, he's in hiding tonight. Positive Phil. Can't get a hold of Positive Phil.

Funny he doesn't answer his phone calls. First of all, let me say this. I thought as a Sports fan, that second half was fantastic. The Anthony was dunked.

Yes. But just to be clear, yes, there are times where it's disheartening, right? But if you're a Sports fan, there's nothing better than when you're watching a game involving a local team and your heart is racing. I don't think anyone wants to hear that right now, unfortunately.

I'm sorry, but I'm not going to get on here and immediately dump on the Wolves because, yes, Dallas has two just premier phenomenal players. That being said, I think that there are two storylines to look at tonight, and it's sort of a choose your own adventure. Okay? If you'd like to choose the Tony Brothers is off to Sturess Adventure, the Free Throws Tonight, the Wolves had 17, they made 12.

The Mavericks had 31, they made 26. If you would like to choose the, hey, realistically, what happened? Adventure. In the second half, especially, I like the fact that in the entire game, Ant was clearly committed to being more aggressive.

But in the second half, there were moments at which he did what he threatened to do, which was take over. The flip side of that is Cat. Five for 18 tonight, 0 for 8 from 3, 14 points, and I'm sorry, but I'm going to keep going back to what I've said. You just have to get more.

Like, if if Kyrie and Luca are going to play like they are both playing, which is, you know, picking up the slack at any given moment, you cannot have a unicorn self-proclaimed greatest three point shooting big man in the history of said league, 0 for 8 from 3, and in the first half, look like he didn't have a clue. So again, choose your own adventure. Are the referees out to screw you or do you want to look at what your own team didn't do well? Yeah, well, it's funny.

I'll make one comment about the officiating. You think that the NBA would actually want to, if you're going to lean a little bit, like put your thumb on the scale, you want the series to go longer. So you don't get too sweeps in the Eastern and Western Conference files. It is funny, though, like Luca can literally use his arm as an arm bar and shove defenders because he can't get by anyone because he's, you know, the gigantic sort of, I mean, I don't want to disrespect him because he is one of the greatest players of our generation.

But he commits a lot of offensive files that never get called. There's a whole officiating conversation here. I don't think the wolves lost because of officiating. I don't think the wolves are down 3-0 because of officiating.

Let's talk about the two players in question here. So the theme of the series has been among a bunch of other sub-themes. Dallas's two main stars have been incredible. They've been efficient.

They've hit huge shots down the stretch. They're both scoring 30 points on 20 shots every night in the series. You know, they're finding the right match ups, you know, they do a brilliant job of arranging the screens a certain way to get the match ups that they want. Draw the double teams, make the right pass, ball comes back to them, Kyrie Irving and Luca Donchich have been brilliant in this series.

And they've clearly taken their game to the highest level it's been since they were paired up a couple years ago. Right? So like, that's the main headline on the Dallas side. On the wolf side, the main headline going into this game was, they're two main stars, Anthony Edwards and Carl Anthony Tounds, combined to shoot 30% in the first two games of the series.

And positive Phil was out here saying, listen, they just lost the first two games by combined four points when they're two best offensive players shot 30%. I'm not even asking for 55 or 60%. Just give me like 42%, 45%. And those games are different.

You might even have a two elite. So do those guys show up for the rest of the series was the biggest question. Well, tonight with your entire season on the line, Anthony Edwards, especially in the second half says, this is my Dwayne Wade 2006 moment, NBA finals game three down two games to none to the Mavericks. I'm taking over and I'm going to put my name on this series on this league.

This dunk, I'm going to posterize somebody. I'm going to hit a bunch of tough mid-range shots, bank shot, fadeaways, 26 points, nine rebounds, nine assists. He's out there fighting like the seasons on the line. And then you have the other guy, Carl Anthony Townes, not that he wasn't fighting, but he's always fighting himself more than anything, right?

And tonight he was fighting his jump shot. He was fighting whether he should be posting up and going to school on the smaller players that regarding him. And he could just never figure it out. Five for 18 from the field tonight, Judd.

Over eight from three point range. And in this series, as the stakes get raised, you go deeper in the playoffs. This is the deepest water you've ever swam in in your NBA career. And you are three for 22 from three point range.

You are 15 for four, a 15 for 54 from the field. He's shooting, what is that? 27, 28% in this series? Absolutely shrinking in the biggest series of his career.

For all the praise against Phoenix and all the praise in that series against Denver. And the great job he did defensively too on Kevin Durant in round one and the Joker in round two. These last three games, Carl has looked completely in over his head, overwhelmed and can't hit the broad side of a barn when they need his offense the most. That's to me, it's the two stars and the two stars and one of the Wolf Stars showed up tonight and was looking for anybody to join him in the foxhole.

And Carl didn't unfortunately. And other players like like tonight and really throughout the series, other wolves supporting players have done a nice job at times. But as the Mavericks are proving, if you don't have both your superstars playing well, and in their case they're playing outstanding basketball, well let's just say playing well, you're absolutely screwed. And tonight, answer the question of, okay, what if one of them plays well?

Because that's like a half ant was phenomenal. Like he did everything he could possibly do. And the reality is this and you know, I spent two days fighting with people on Twitter about cat being benched at the end of game two. But when you have Supermax players, you can't afford for them to shrink.

I keep seeing notes about, well, but remember Carl, you know, played a huge role in winning the Denver series. He was a big player. And that's awesome. That's great.

But you can't, but that's 50% of the playoffs. Phoenix Denver 50%. You're not done. You have two rounds left.

And for what's happened to Transpire, I think makes some upcoming decisions that can be made probably after game four or five here, depending on how long this thing goes. That makes them pretty crystal clear here. I will say this, Phil, in my opinion, this series has created clarity. Like this has created a lot in my brain of wolves clarity about who can do what, who's doing what?

Because I mean, if you're aspiring to win an NBA title, this is the series at which you need guys continuing to elevate. Yeah, it's, I mean, you, it's especially glaring in this series, the need for a second person to be able to get their own offense, to be able to create when Anthony Edwards has a rough couple of games. Is there somebody else? He's 22 years old.

He's still trying to figure this thing out. I thought that the wolves, just their depth, their defense, Anthony Edwards, the freight train, sort of role player, Carl, I thought that collective would be enough for the wolves to beat the Mavericks in six or seven games in this series. And obviously at this point, there would have to be an historic, unprecedented comeback here for them to do that. So yeah, it's a, it's your point about things becoming crystal clear.

I think a lot of people in the broadcasters are picking on Rudy Go Bear. I mean, Rudy Go Bear, you know, just in terms of what the wolves did when he was on the court versus off the court versus some of the other players mean the wolves. It looks clunky sometimes with Go Bear. But they continue to be more effective with him on the court than off the court by a mile in these playoffs.

Now he was a minus seven tonight, but, but like my calmly was a minus 18 in this game. Carl was a minus 12. So I know that it looks weird when like Rudy gets switched on Tyree Irving and he gets put in a spin cycle or look at the dagger in game two and you know, he's, he's the easy guy to scapegoat and Dremon Green is on national TV and the wolves arena clowning Rudy for pre-post and halftime. Like I get it, but if you're, if we're creating a pie chart of things that stand out and need to be stared at going into next season, you can't have a super max player that's basically a role player and a super max player that's shooting 27% in the three most important games of the season and no showing you can't have that.

Sorry. And what creates the potential clarity here too is full credit, but Nas Reed is basically right if there was a a trust tree, like if the wolves coaching staff right now said, okay, tell me the truth off the record. What's the trust tree like Nas Reed is way above cat. So you've got the replacement there.

That's the thing and he's a hell of a lot cheaper and when push comes to shove, you know, in these past two games and crunch time, I think they clearly trust Nas more and and Nas deserves credit for one thing especially. You know what? Nas was fantastic in game too. He was solid.

He didn't make his shooting his three's were more off tonight, but you know what I don't see? I don't see Nas questioning himself constantly. I don't see Nas getting in his own feelings. I don't see Nas complaining.

I see Nas makes a shot, misses a shot and gets his ass back on defense and just works. And so like that to me is what's glaring. If if Carl was struggling and there was no one else like him to replace him, it would be a problem because you'd say, okay, if you trade him, if he does not come back, who replaces him? The answer is simple.

And I'm sorry again. This is the most important time. This is the most important series. The first two are great, but the Western Conference Finals is the final step to the NBA Finals.

This is the most important series and Nas Reed clearly, I think, in just about every facet from the mental to the actual basketball stuff has has been far superior to what Carl has and that has to mean something. I mean Kyle Anderson in the limited minutes has been very serious. By the way, you talk about like basketball match ups because I mean, Sloma probably shouldn't have played in round two. Like everything was a disaster.

That guy against Dallas where he matches up has been really damn good. Credit. Yeah, man, that little shot clock winding down and just throws him a grenade with like 1.5 seconds left. And he catches it like he started the motion.

It's like if like we were to send you or me into like a batting cage and we're going to crank it up to 100 miles an hour. So you better start your swing before that ball gets out of the pitcher's hand. It was like he started his little slo-motion before he got the ball. You're right.

You did. So what do you have? Because let's stay on cat for a second here because I saw you fight in the good fight. You know, not a lot was made after game two that he sat on the bench for the final nine minutes, right?

I think a lot of people were well, but he didn't complain about it. You know, he was being a good teammate on the sidelines. Yeah, like of course he didn't complain about it. And he did, you know, he did say the right things after the game.

And even after tonight, you know, there's like a protective coating around Carl Anthony Townes because he's been the longtime good soldier here putting in his almost a decade since he was the number one overall pick. What do you have to say, sports dad, to the pushback about how hey, like you're being a little hard on a guy that has been around here for a long time and has brought a lot of good basketball to the court. I said this, he's a super max player. He is a super max player.

He is supposed to be, I would say it's very fair to say next to aunt. He's your secondary star. So if if aunt is the world look, he's supposed to be the kairi. He's supposed to be the second guy.

And for and now I was told by a person who was in in a far better vantage point to see the interaction when cat got taken out with like nine to three eight left in game two, that it was because he allowed, I think it was lively to go right past him and he sort of bailed out. He did like he kind of like, yeah, and what I was told was you could see across the court Finch went after him Finch is like, what are we doing and didn't play him again. And so like to me, that is inexcusable. And I cannot just because I also got well, not as planned so well.

What are you supposed to do? Well, first of all, it's not unprecedented for cat and not as to play at the same time. Second of all, again, he's your he's your super max guy and you flat out are saying, we trust Nas Reed more. I'm sorry.

In my world, that's a problem. So like I don't even think Mike takes on this or hot. I think my takes are super max player nine minutes left in the game played as big a role as John Yeah, let's let's respond to a couple comments here too. You guys are are just rocking the comment section here from all angles as we go live here on the Scornorth YouTube channel.

This is flagrant howls and if you maybe you're just finding it for the first time, if you could give the subscribe button a mash and the like button a mash, you can help us keep growing this thing at Scornorth flagrant house on Apple and Spotify as well. We've got other great contributors like Kyle Teige, Jim Peterson, Michael Grady are part of this thing. So Jackson M says, stop saying aunt showed up in the second half. He showed up in the third and then disappeared in the fourth couple things on that again.

You're down by double digits. Your season's on the brink. If you don't come back and win game three, like falling down three, Oh, is obviously a problem and he hulks up throws down one of the craziest post rising dunks in recent post season history starts getting his mid range game going, right? The team starts feeding off his energy.

He's thumping his chest. He's trash talking. It's the aunt that we saw in the first two series against Phoenix and Denver. He puts the team on his back.

They take the lead for the first time since they're up five to three in the first minute and a half of the game. And then from my vantage point, just watching like an idiot on TV. I thought the team inexplicably stopped getting him the ball in the last part of the fourth quarter. Like they ran two or three possessions in the last like three minutes and he didn't touch the ball.

He broke that. What are we like? What is happening? Like some of this, I saw a couple of the national guys I follow.

Can we get the wolves in offensive coordinator for two thousand 24 25 and it's like, I'm trying to sit here just to zoom out for a second and balance the macro, which is what a season to this point for the Timmerwolves beating the sun's beating the nuggets coming back from down 20 points in a game seven on the road. Anthony Edwards largely rising up again in the playoffs and putting himself on the map. I mean, this is a wildly successful season for this team, but the micro as we dissect. Okay.

Now they're hitting a glass ceiling here. How much of it is what Dallas is doing? How much of it is what the Timmerwolves are or aren't doing and need to change. And I just don't know how you can look at Anthony Edwards in this game.

I mean, yeah, there's going to be things like there's a couple turnovers or whatever, but to me, like in these three games, the glaring thing is Carl Anthony towns. The glaring thing in these three games is Carl Anthony towns. Well, and so like we've not talked a lot about this and it probably deserves some examination perhaps in the post more than once it's all done. But you know, part of this too is and I've seen a bunch of comments about this is coaching.

There's no question Jason Kidd has won this through three games. And look, all of these games have been close. Like that's the thing about it that has to be weighed because there are definitely some very disappointing things for wolves fans. But I think to go back to what you were just talking about, I think if we look at this series in the in the macro eventually once it's done, I do think that we have to realize that the closeness of these games is indicative of how the playoffs are supposed to go.

Like the Denver series was the one that was completely in my opinion out of character. That many blowouts in a playoff, like that's not normal unless it's one really bad team against a good team. So, so yes, there are I think we're going to be able to sit down here including coaching and dissect a lot of small things that the wolves did wrong that cost them because you know, Phil, if I'm not mistaken tonight was the biggest margin of victory. And the game was tied after three quarters and I think the wolves had a two point lead with something like five minutes left in the game or later.

So, so I agree completely with yes coaching has played a role how Ant doesn't touch the ball late is beyond me, especially when he basically was going hero by himself. And in some cases that's bad, but in this game I actually got it because like this series comes down to Luga, Kyrie, Ant, and it should be cat. That's the problem too is the wolves to your point about cat and my point. The wolves are literally playing down a man because you don't have one of your stars even coming close to pulling the weight that he's supposed to pull.

Yeah, there's a couple tactical things we can get into here too that are interesting. I mean, the wolves actually did a really good job of eliminating those just automatic dunks and all-uaps that you saw throughout the first couple games at the expense of leaving the corners wide open. They basically, they basically went in and said, hey, we're not going to give up an automatic to we'd rather make you at least hit a wide open three and earn it and Dallas did. And that's the problem is when I think it's the right move to blitz both Kyrie and Luga off the screens to just put pressure on them, make them get the ball out of their hands.

But the problem is now the Mavericks are playing four on three on the back end of it. And in the first two games, they were playing four on three and they were getting automatic dunks. I want to say that Lively and Gafford had like 14 dunks or something in game two. Yes.

And Lively got hurt. That was a huge part of the reason why the wolves came back in this game is because Lively was not playing in the second half. And despite the fact it was accidental, that was Cat. And because he went into Cat's knee, I don't, my guess is he's not playing game four.

That looks really bad. Yeah. They said neck injury, but they said spray neck. I'm that dude, I don't know if you saw when they helped him off the court.

If that's not a concussion, then I've never seen a concussion in my life. Yeah, he was he was wobbly man, for sure. But the other tactical thing is just Kyrie and Luca are playing offensive chess at the grandmaster level. And when they get into these late game situations, not only do they get the looks and the match up that they want, but even if you defend it perfectly and put a hand in one of their faces and make them fade away from the basket, they're still cashing these shots.

And that's where Anthony Edwards has a little bit of that. I mean, he definitely has sports where he can just hit the impossible shots and go nuclear, full NBA jam. He's on fire for stretches. But he at age 22 has not mastered the art of the last five minutes of a basketball game.

You know, he has and to his defense a little bit too. He's got some unreliable teammates and spacing issues and even just like, I don't know if it's like Chris Finch doesn't dial up plays often enough. It seems oftentimes like there's just chaos for 15 or 20 seconds and then Anthony Edwards needs to do something and save the possession. But if Connolly's out for sure.

Yeah, it's and even when Connolly's in like at the end of this game, there's just a lot of just like, what are they doing for 15 or 20 seconds? And now it's just panic time and so and the wolves still like they just have not figured out how to deal with Dallas's size, how to get how to get to the paint in the rim and and make these shots at the level that they were. I mean, look at the I'm on clean in the glass right now. Just looking at some of the the shot charts, the Timmer wolves again tonight missed 18 shots at the rim or in the paint like in the short mid paint area.

They missed 30 in game too. So it was better mostly because of Anthony Edwards getting, you know, some of those layups that were accustomed to. But Yeah, I mean, you got two dudes playing offensive chess at a grandmaster level and Anthony Edwards probably gets there in two or three years, but your best bet was to just outplay them in the first three and a half quarters, have a 12 or 13 point lead and hang on for dear life. And you had that in game two, but you gave it all up way too early.

Well, I think what the first two rounds masked as well was the problem that this team had from what about the halfway point of the season, which is their late game in aptitude as well, like their late half in the first two rounds. I mean, they basically without a problem dispatched by the sons and then the Denver series was seven games, but it was just completely bizarre and game flow, right? So the so in three games thus far, they've all been close. And to what you're talking about, it feels like that disorganization panic.

I don't know what the right word is, but it's really wonky. This team doesn't know how to harness it. And the problem is they're playing a team that's got it down pat. And so, so, and I mean, that's, that's on coaching too.

That's not just a player thing. That's a finch thing. That's a coaching thing. Why is the team in the Western Conference finals finally playing close games, which you knew eventually was going to happen?

If you made a run, why are they freaking out in games that are winnable? Yeah, I mean, it's, it's a good question, but you've got some guys who have never done this before, this late in the playoffs. Jay McDaniel's has not played in these games before. But like, why was it?

Carl is not played in February. I guess my question is how did you, how did this not get harnessed a little bit more? If this just started now, I'd be like, okay, experience is a problem, although I'm tired of the Carl one because the man's what 28 now, and he's played on a lot of playoff games. But anyway, what's weird is it started, I think around January, and it was like, it's like a snowball effect.

It hasn't stopped. And it's very weird that a team that can be as good as the wolves and at times as disciplined seems to lose all discipline when it matters most. Yeah, I think part of it is like you just don't, you don't have a second offensive pillar that you can rely on to go get his when he needs to. Like Carl is an offensive pillar in that he averages 20 plus points, and he's been an all MBA guy, and he's one of the greatest shooting big men in NBA history.

But he doesn't consistently create his own offense. You see him, like he can do all the things he can drive, he can post up, he can do these things, but it's so wildly inconsistent. His drives, I feel like half the time end up in either offensive fouls or just like a flailing like the ball gets stripped and now he's on the ground, and the other teams going five on four back the other way. So, you know, there's just, we're not quite to the offseason yet, but they're, they're definitely making their off season reservations here.

We'll see if they can bring it back to Minnesota. But yeah, these first three games have given the Tim Rool is a lot to think about good and bad. Like the good, you made it this far for the first time in 20 years. This is a very successful season.

Not many people thought they were a Western Conference Finals team based on what we saw last year. But if you want to become a championship team, there's a lot of really interesting conversations that idiots like us can have on the mic, but also the front office and Tim Conley behind the scenes. Absolutely. Yeah, the graphic put up by TNT at the end of the game teams up three and all in NBA playoff series 154 and all.

Yeah. Well, last year, was it the it was the Celtics Heat series where you had it was three on the games and then the game seven game seven. But that's as close as we've as we've come real quick a shout out to there's been a lot of people the last few days wondering, Hey, these hats, these hats, these hats that judge you got your hat right? Oh, no, we already know what's so with the Kyle, I hope Kyle did take it and he's he looks very good at these legendary golf apparel hats that you can find at lgndy.co that's lgndy.co.

I guess my thought is this.

I see some comments trying to say or I've seen at least one that's at aunt played as poorly as cat and that's simply not true. He got off to what they both kind of have had stars but he did not play as poorly. He in the third quarter like him or not, he willed his team back in and it was fun to watch. But the thing is and I know Carl's got stands just like just like Kirk did.

Carl stands you got to take a long hard look in the mirror itself and at your favorite player because I don't care what he did in rounds one two that doesn't give you a license to disappear in round three especially when you're going on 30 and you have a ton of playoff experience for all these people who are saying oh they're young they're young well they got my Conley and they got Carl and if Carl can't basically pull them up by their bootstraps through his experience then I don't know like are we supposed to bring a guy my age who's played some playoff games bring a guy back from you know bring Jordan back see if he wants to join him for a game so yeah this is that's the biggest disturbing thing to me is that these are all close games and you had a chance in all three of them and haven't been able to get it done and Dallas has. Okay so people in the comments want positive fill to make an appearance here. What's going to say I mean positive fill is down and out right now it's very hard to get positive fill is in really rough shape. Can you find a staff positive fill that gives people hope.

Positive fill needs a cocktail is what is what he needs right now. Here's the okay here's positive fill it's not it's not about this series so if you're looking for positive fill to help you to help try to convince you that the wolves are going to be the first team in NBA history to dig out of a hole like this against two historically great offensive players it's not going to happen but I think the excuse me I think the silver lining is Anthony Edwards wasn't a perfect game for him certainly not but he continues to show that he is absolutely that dude who's going to lead this franchise he's the centerpiece of this thing he's going to be a face of the NBA he's going to keep getting better over the next three to four years. Jade McDaniel's offensive game has started to blossom more in these playoffs when you know he's been given opportunities he's 23 years old Nas Reed I believe is still 23 years old under contract and he'll be starting to get this right yeah I mean the keel and the keel needs to start he needs to be way more consistent from three point range he did make his first three pointer tonight since I believe May 16th so what is it gonna say January 16th not quite that long but it felt that way it felt like it first three so you've got like you've got some dudes who are 23 22 25 years old here and then you just have to sort of you know conley I worry about conley though because you know the older you get the deeper you go it's just it's gonna be tough for him to be the same version next year but yep you know you just the carl thing is a big big topic over the next two months a big topic so that's kind of there's yeah positive fill he's not gonna sit here and tell you walls in seven I'm sorry go go win game four and then go win game five at home and then positive fill may make an appearance before game six but he's gonna be in hiding for a while it feels like more than three games to me at least feels like we've seen about five games so far just with the closest of all these games yeah yeah it's it's been a war man it's it's like the antithesis of the nugget series which was just blowout after blowout in haymakers and in some ways you almost wish that that's what this series would be like because the like the wolves operate very well when it's just time to absolutely ambush a team and get up by 30 points and ride the wave and defense it's like an NFL team getting up by three touchdowns with great edge rushers and they just come at you right but when this team offensively especially is up against another really good team that knows exactly who they are in the big moments offensively right like the wolves are not going to be as precise and organized and effective offensively need a bucket as the Mavericks and so when the games are close in the last three or four minutes you need some sort of stroke of luck or you need the math to miss some shots and they aren't but this is the playoffs like this is what they're supposed to be like so so as far as as things to tuck away for next season when they hopefully knock on wood can make a run again um this is what you're up against like those first two rounds were sort of well the first the first round was bizarro world because you swept and the second round was not the playoffs like they're ordinarily played and this is so like you gotta find you gotta find a way in crunch time and I don't know like that that's the question is yes aunt will come of age how many other guys and there's a few but are can come along for that ride and effectively learn from this and I'm sorry it can't be a bunch of guys nearing 30 who you're like well next time we'll get them yeah and they do our first round pick and they do a couple interesting guys could have more than one first round pick at the right they're going well they call like a Carl trade is that what they could have lots of first round pick like I think but once you went went that trade be for another established I was being flippant I was being very oh sports dad was joking or the sports dad joke well we can we can definitely we'll have some extra I mean I could be rather to I don't know but I was being very flippant yeah um I had one more thing I was gonna oh I wonder if our crack research staff can look this up has a team ever swept the first round one in seven games in the second round and then gotten swept in the conference finals tag TNT with that assignment I'm sure they'll do it for you I mean maybe ESPN stats and info or somebody but that's a great question to sweep in the first round win in seven game from the second round and then get swept in the conference finals boy that's uh you're you're hitting all the different all the different areas of the western conference play off party room with with those results certainly worth researching so all right that's a wrap on this episode and maybe a wrap on the terrible season Judd I'm gonna go find positive filling see what he needs before the night sorry up so well thank you guys for hanging out with us later on this memorial day weekend sunday night and uh terrible is a maverick's game for 48 hours to rest up and start the greatest comeback in mba history this is flagren howls at tiller wolves lifestyle podcast
